The Power of Another

At the LORD’s command, a man of God from Judah…
1 Kings 13:1a

My Takeaways

Something Old

A nameless and faceless man chosen to be used by God. He must have been a faithful man that God could trust to obey Him.

Can I be trusted to obey God?

Something New

The prophet lied. We aren’t told why, but in this moment, he became an enemy of the man of God. (Perhaps this was true, and perhaps it was a deceiving angel. Satan and his messengers can appear as angels of light (2 Corinthians 11:14-15))

Satan is a master at deception. He gets to us when we are at our weakest.

The man of God was tempted to disobey when he

  • Obeyed God with all his strength
  • Had valiantly turned down the king’s invitation
  • Was weak and hungry

Something to Do

Stay close enough to God to recognize deception.

  1. The Old Testament often makes me call on Deuteronomy 29:29! However, today I received teaching very similar to Wendy’s. The verse that stood out was 1Kings 13:21 …”You have defied the word of the Lord and have disobeyed the command the Lord your God gave YOU”. (I put the emphasis on you.) In other words, God speaks into our hearts individually, through the Holy Spirit. His message to me may be slightly different from my friend’s message. I need to be still and discern what God tells me and follow those instructions, regardless of what the world appears to be doing. The best way to know God’s desires for us is to remain in scripture and in close relationship with Him.
