The Keeping Of The Standard
And the LORD replied, “I will test my people with the plumb line. I will no longer ignore all their sins.”
Amos 7:8b
My Takeaways
Something Old
God will keep and uphold His standards.
- God has a standard. (Amos 7:7-9)
We didn’t measure up. He sent Jesus.
For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 - God has a warning. (Amos 7:10-17)
We will sin. He sent the Holy Spirit to convict, teach, and guide.
And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. John 16:8 - God has a time. (Amos 8:2)
We will receive correction. He disciplines those He loves.
For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child. Hebrews 12:6
No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way. Hebrews 12:11 - God has a promise. (Amos 9:11-15)
We will be restored. He will restore us.
In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So, after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation. 1 Peter 5:10
Something New
Do I just tolerate church? Am I just going through the motions? (Amos 8:4-5)
Something to Do
Keep with the standard set for me as God’s child.
Wendy, I really appreciate today’s lesson. Loved that you tied it to the New Testament. When we stay in the OT until Sept (!), it is refreshing to get the reminder that we have Jesus and the Holy Spirit!
My favorite verses today came from Amos 9:11 – “In that day I will restore the fallen house of David. I will repair its damaged walls. From the ruins I will rebuild it and restore its former glory.” Restore. Repair. Rebuild.
After going through a difficult time, it is good to know that God WILL restore, repair, and rebuild us!
