What The Lord Loves
“There are six things the LORD hates- no, seven things He detests.” Proverbs 6:16
My Take Aways
Something to Old
Our Lord has a passionate and intense dislike to six things; no there are seven things he detests. The ESV uses the word admonition meaning a disgusting thing.
Let’s take a deeper look at these seven things:
- Haughty eyes ~ Eyes that are snobbish, prideful or scornfully arrogant.
- Lying Tongue ~ A mouth that contains untruthfulness and deceptive
- Hands that kill the innocent ~ Hands that steal life
- Feet that race to do wrong ~ One who seeks to do wrong before right
- A heart that plots evil ~ A heart that plans and schemes with intent to harm
- A false witness ~ One who lies about another
- A person who sows family discord ~ One who purposefully “stirs the pot” so harmony can not be enjoyed.
Something to New
What the Lord loves:
- Humble and meek eyes full of compassion
- A truthful tongue with words to encourage
- Hands that love and nurture life
- Feet that race to do good
- A heart that longs to practice kindness
- A mouth that would not bear false witness
- A person who sows harmony in my family instead of discord
Something to Do
Do what the Lord loves.
Wow – I did the exact same thing with these verses – I looked for the opposite. And realizing that the things the Lord finds disgusting are things that I STILL do brings me to another level of awareness of the depravity of the flesh and my need for a Savior (thanks, Wendy, for your honesty with this as well – it helped me stop condemning myself) …
All the things that the Lord hates are things that bring the opposite of peace. The last, “a person who sows discord in a family” is one I know well – I was that person sowing discord in my own family (my heart plotted evil at every turn) and thankfully, that is no longer the case. The Lord used a tragedy in my family (losing both my mom and a sister in a 3 week period) to bring me and my siblings together and now I sow peace and love into those relationships. “Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called children of God” Doing the things He loves bring peace to any situation.
To do: do what God loves – be a peacemaker
My takeaways from today:
-Share your love only with your wife. . .You should reserve it for yourselves. Never share it with strangers. (Prov 5:15 & 17)
This speaks to the purity and exclusivity of marriage and how important it is for me to guard my heart in this area.
-For the LORD sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes. (Prov 5:21)
Seek God’s guidance and ask Him to examine the paths I am taking.
-Take a lesson from the ants. They have no one making them work but they labor hard. (Prov 6:6-8)
Work hard but guard against overdoing it. Allow times for rest and fellowship with my family and others.
-I also noted the 7 things the LORD hates and used this as a time of confession and asking the Lord to search my heart in regard to each one.
