The Comprehensive Prayer
And he prayed, “O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in all of heaven above or on the earth below. You keep your covenant and show unfailing love to all who walk before you in wholehearted devotion.
1 Kings 8:23
My Takeaways
Something Old
Solomon prayed a very comprehensive prayer. “If”…. “Hear us from heaven.”
The Lord’s Prayer should be understood as an example, a pattern, of how to pray. It gives us the “ingredients” that should go into prayer.
Jesus taught us a very comprehensive prayer in Matthew 6:6-13
But whenever you pray, go into your innermost chamber and be alone with Father God, praying to him in secret. And your Father, who sees all you do, will reward you openly. When you pray, there is no need to repeat empty phrases, praying like those who don’t know God, for they expect God to hear them because of their many words. There is no need to imitate them, since your Father already knows what you need before you ask him. Pray like this:
‘Our Father, dwelling in the heavenly realms, may the glory of your name be the center on which our lives turn. Manifest your kingdom realm, and cause your every purpose to be fulfilled on earth, just as it is fulfilled in heaven. We acknowledge you as our Provider of all we need each day. Forgive us the wrongs we have done as we ourselves release forgiveness to those who have wronged us. Rescue us every time we face tribulation and set us free from evil. For you are the King who rule with power and glory forever. Amen.’ The Passion Translation
Something New
I can’t imagine sacrificing more than I could count. (1 Kings 8:5)
Something to Do
Follow Jesus’ example for prayer.
Good Morning friends! A few things stood out to me today.
Inner sanctuary of the Temple-The Most Holy Place. 1 Kings 8:6
The glorious presence of the Lord filled the Temple of the Lord. 1 Kings 8:11
The same way the Holy Spirit fills our bodies, our temples when we are saved.
My inner sanctuary-My Most Holy Place-my Temple. I am a Temple of the Lord.
“Don’t you realize that your body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself” 1 Corinthians 6:19
Remembering this verse has helped me in my journey to whole health. I remember that everything I say, do or don’t do, eat, think etc is to be for His glory and my body is not my own. It changes my decisions on how I live.
Temple-a place dedicated to the service or worship of a deity. Any place or object in which God dwells, as in the body of a Christian.
I really ponder that truth and let it marinate deep within. What an incredible gift Emmanuel God with us.
The trumpeters and singers performed together in unison to praise and give thanks to the Lord. They raised their voices and praised the Lord with these words:
He is good!
His faithful love endures forever!
1 Kings 8:13

Hear the Holy Roar, the anthem rise, the symphony in the house of God to our King!
Father God, let me always sing out and raise my voice! I will sing your praises forever and ever! How great and wonderful and glorious you are, my Lord, my God! Let all that is within me shout your praises! I will raise my hallelujah, hear the Holy Roar!
I bet all the musicians and singers didn’t have weekly choir practice. They naturally and organically all came together, performed in unison raising their voices praising God, creating a symphony of praise! This is so awesome! Lord I will sing!
God has really connected with me on such an intimate level through music and worship. He has given me a song everyday to hear from him, to praise him, to connect to him. I just joined a summer Gospel choir and I couldn’t be more excited to get started!
My to do:
Wholehearted devotion
Guard my behavior
Faithfully follow God
Follow the right path
Turn to God in repentance and pray
1 Kings 8
Solomon was bold and humble in his prayer for his people. What an awesome example he was as he prayed this way, with lifted hands in front of the entire community.
Praise Him Forever!

1 Kings 8:18-19 stood out to me today. “Your intention is good, but you are not the one to do it.”
How many times have I had good intentions and rushed into carrying those intentions out and ended up feeling overwhelmed by what I took on? Many times! This hit me hard today…I need to take all good intentions before the Lord and seek him as to if I’m the one to carry them out. I can often see something as a good thing and just assume I’m to do it and jump in with plans and action. Sometimes it turns out well and sometimes it doesn’t and leaves me feeling over-committed or overwhelmed. God’s call to service and action will compliment not complicate my life…thanks wendy! 😉
I have struggled with this in the past too and the temptation is still there at times to take on too much or jump into something without praying about if it is something I should do or not. Also, I sometimes feel guilty when I have said no to something even though I feel saying no was the right choice in that particular situation. I think that comes from my people-pleasing bent and perhaps from the enemy as well. It has become easier over time, though, as I have realized what you stated above from Wendy that my service should complement not complicate my life. That is a good word and so freeing! There is joy in that type of service! It has also helped me to have someone in my life who knows me well that I can run opportunities for service by for their input. For me that is my husband.
I noted 2 Scriptures to use as prayers of praise today:
-He is good! His faithful love endures forever! (2 Chronicles 5:13)
-O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in all of heaven above or on the earth below. You keep your covenant and show unfailing love to all who walk before you in wholehearted devotion. (1 Kings 8:23 & 2 Chronicles 6:14)
Don’t count what you sacrifice.
Solomon’s prayer is awesome! It reveals so much to the broken: Justice (8:31-32,32), Mercy and restoration (8:33-34), Relief (8:35-39), Unmerited favor and relationship (8:41-43),Protection (8:44-45) and Compassion (8:46-49).
Where God places His Name, He comes in glory. God hears the repentant prayers of those who bear His Name regardless of the consequences of their sins.
Justice, victory, and blessing are conditional upon man’s repentance before God.
