Destroy Or Be Destroyed
After the Philistines captured the Ark of God, they took it from the battleground at Ebenezer to the town of Ashdod. They carried the Ark of God into the temple of Dagon and placed it beside an idol of Dagon.
1 Samuel 5:1-2
My Takeaways
Something Old
Destruction will come to us through our idolatry, if we don’t destroy our idols.
They had the same two choices you and I have today.
We can humbly submit to God, and embrace His Lordship.
OR
Reject Him, and face the consequences of life that come with rejecting Him.
God will not be disgraced, not then and not now. Let’s make certain God is not competing for worship with anything.
Spiritual discipline is the best way to get rid of the idols in our life.
Something New
Something to Do
Destroy my idols before they bring destruction to me.
Every time I read about the Ark of God being put in the temple of Dagon, and Dagon falling over I think about how every knee will bow before the Lord! Nothing, nobody, can stand in His Presence and not bow before Him in reverence!
Yes! I love the connection you made there. It really resonated with me this morning.
1 Sameul 8 – they wanted a king…why? Because they wanted to be like the nations around them. Made me think of Romans 12 and not being conformed to this world. Wanting to fit in and be like the world never leads to anything good. Be on guard for ways I have tried to be like the world and quickly confess and allow God transform my mind to Him and His ways.
Noted that in 1Sam 7:12 Ebenezer means “the stone of my help”. I’ve heard that word on songs and never knew what it meant.
I had some of the same thoughts about them wanting to be like everyone else. So easy to fall into that trap!
~I was thinking about the fact that the Israelites had made the Ark an idol, trusting in it rather than in God. What good/holy thing have I made an idol and am trusting in rather than in God? Or what might I be tempted to trust in?
~It is always comforting to me when I read that God told Samuel the people were really rejecting Him not Samuel. There have been times in my life where people have rejected me because of my faith. However, I need to be careful how I witness so people do not reject me because I have been obnoxious about it.
I was challenged by your comment about what Holy things have I made idols? I can tend to make a formula or routines with the Lord into idols and begin missing the relationship.
Amen!
Oh I can do this as well!!
Good Morning Friends, the song I’m sharing today is more of a cry for prayer than one that really speaks from today’s lesson. Maybe it actually goes with the lessons from the last couple of days. Either way, I need prayer….”Year after year it was the same…” My precious son has been handed rejection after rejection after rejection. He’s strong but even the strongest have a breaking point. Please pray for him. Pray “that God will even though God hasn’t.” Thanks y’all…so much..

Praying for him and for your mama heart. ❤️
Thank you so much❤️
Yes I cringed when they took the Ark to the temple of Dagon but I also was not worried- I thought “ooooo this isn’t going to be good for them because God will have the last say!”
And I also noticed that Eli broke at the news of the Ark being captured, not of his own sons being killed.
Something To Do- Ask for God’s guidance in raising godly children. Just like Eli, Samuel’s 2 sons Joel and Abidjan were ungodly. They were greedy for money and perverted justice. 1st Sam 8:1-2
