Keep And Do
Obey them completely, and you will display your wisdom and intelligence among the surrounding nations. When they hear all these decrees, they will exclaim, ‘How wise and prudent are the people of this great nation!
Deuteronomy 4:6

Something Old
Shaw-mar (sha-ma) Keep and Do
Keep: to hold or retain in one’s possession; hold as one’s own.
Do: to act or conduct oneself; be in action; behave.
When we keep and do what the Lord asks:
- We become wise.
- We become intelligent/understanding/discerning.
- Others know notice your God.
- Others will be drawn to your God.
Something New
Obedience is a sign of wisdom.
Something to Do
Keep and do what God asks me to do.
Many years ago, I lived in a trailer park and some called us trailer trash. An area most wouldn’t go to witness, except the Jehovah Witness. It was my area, I witnessd to everyone who would listen aboutJesus and His Word, except one! She sold her body for money, sold drugs, very rich men came for sex and drugs. BMW’s, Cadillacs and Porches parked out front.
God asked me to go witness to her, I told Him no, didn’t want any part of her life style around my family, especially my children.
Time went by, on Sunday’s coming home from church, there were children’s SS papers scattered all over the front room, it was a mess!! Then on Monday!!
There was a knock on the door, your right, it was “her”. I wouldn’t go to her so God brought her to me. The kids were at school, which I was thankful for, hmmmmm!
Can we talk were her first words, she looked on the floor, picked up one of the kids SS lessons and began to read. In my disobedience, there before me was a lost soul who needed help and the gift of salvation. I used that SS lesson to share Jesus Christ, the plan of salvation and she prayed the sinners prayer. She eventually moved home to another state to be with her family and away from her lifestyle.
Wow! That’s awesome!
I am humbled that the Lord opened the door I closed.
ccoleman, I loved reading your comment. I thought of Esther being used by God “for such a time as this.” Did you ever think that God placed you at that trailer park for the reason that He wanted to use you as His witness to that woman and so many other people? I love how your story glorifies God.
Mema Jeanne
At the time, no, I am so thankful He gave me the chance to redeem a lost opportunity and open the door I closed. While living there, the Lord preformed many miracles beyond my expectations.
Wow! Praise God!! What a great God Story!
Amazing story! Thanks for sharing!
What stood out to me today was Deut 4:37 “Because He loved your ancestors, He choose to bless their descendants…”. He choose to bless because he loved. I saw a Spureon quote yesterday that really spoke to my heart.
“It is not, ‘I have pitied thee,’ nor ‘I have thought about thee,’ but ‘I have loved thee.’ God is in love with you.” (Spurgeon)
The verse in Deut today just confirmed again the message of Gods love for His people.
Today I was convicted by the last of the 10 commandments–Do not Covet…your neighbor’s wife, your neighbor’s land or house, servant, livestock, ANYTHING ELSE! How do I covet, let me count the ways–another’s home, marriage status, skills-cooking, knitting, etc. I find if I really am honest with myself, I covet a lot. And when I do that, I forget to be thankful for what I have. Are we never satisfied? Do we really continually need more? Help me LORD to be thankful for what You have provided for me. I don’t need what I covet–in You I have everything.
It is good to keep repeating about obedience and hammering in that command. We need to keep hearing it so we will keep it firmly in mind.
I agree . The repetition of the command to be obedient stood out to me as well.
God’s word creates life. I believe when you are obedient to God, He is actually creating in you the new creation that you have already been made to be. The process in which you become who you are made to be is by walking with Him, in your relationship with him. The way obedience becomes genuine is by having an intimate walk and relationship with God. Yes He wants our obedience, but He wants a relationship with his children, it’s what we were made for. The closer we are to God, the more we want to obey from the heart. The more we are in Gods word, the more He changes our heart to one of deep reverence and obedience to Him. Anyone can blindly obey and do what they should, but I don’t believe that’s what He is looking for, that we should do it just because He said so. I believe He wants our hearts to be changed towards Him and that we would obey out of our deep love, respect and fear of Him.
God’s word says:
“Oh that they would always have hearts like this, that they might fear me and obey all my commands.” Deut 5:29 ❤️
Wendy’s key verse for today’s reading was the one that really stood out to me as well. Not only is obedience good for us, it is also a witness to others of the one true and living God that we serve.
