Live Satisfied
Then Moses added, “The Lord will give you meat to eat in the evening and bread to satisfy you in the morning, for he has heard all your complaints against him. What have we done? Yes, your complaints are against the Lord, not against us.”
Exodus 16:8
My Takeaways
Something Old
Then Moses added, “The Lord will give you meat to eat in the evening and bread to satisfy you in the morning, for he has heard all your complaints against him. What have we done? Yes, your complaints are against the Lord, not against us.” Exodus 16:8
Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives. Psalm 90:14
- He has given us the bread, we have to go get it.
- It’s our weapon.
The same weapon Jesus used. He didn’t use a weapon of his deity. He used a weapon we can use.
Jesus used Scripture to battle Satan’s temptation, not some elaborate spiritual power inaccessible to us. Jesus fought this battle as fully man, and He drew on no “special resources” unavailable to us. “Out flashed the sword of the Spirit: our Lord will fight with no other weapon. He could have spoken new revelations, but chose to say, ‘It is written.’” (Spurgeon)
Something New
Do I complain about God’s provisions? Do I long to have things they way they were?
Something to Do
Such a good lesson Wendy. Thank you!
Three things stood out to me today.
In the wilderness, a place unfamiliar and out of their comfort zone:
Provision – God provided for the Israelites. Enough to satisfy, enough to meet their needs and sustain them.
Presence – God never left them. His presence was with them in this wilderness in spite of their grumbling and complaining.
Praise – Jethro shows up and in Exodus 18:10-11 he praises the LORD and says “now I know that the LORD is greater than all other gods.” So all that has happened with Moses, his son-in-law, has served as a testimony. And Jethro now “knows” and praises Him! Hallelujah!
This reading serves as a reminder to me to trust God for the future, wherever He takes me. He will provide, He will never leave me. He is FAITHFUL and His praise must ever be on my lips.
Sara Groves wrote a song a long time ago called Painting Pictures of Egypt and I’ll post the link. It’s this very story of the Israelites applied to her (our) life.

Thanks for sharing the song!
Thank you for sharing the song!
Love the song. Thanks for being obedient to the Holy Spirit and sharing it. It definitely spoke to my heart.
3 things were in my something to do today…
1. God’s commands are a gift to me when I choose to obey. God have them the sabbath as a gift and he provided all they needed so they could enjoy the gift.
2. Tell my story but make it about God not me. Moses told Jethro all that had happened and he bragged on God. As a result jethro knew God was real and praised him.
3. I am God’s possession – read 1 Peter 2:9 where God tells us we are His chosen priesthood and possession. We can show others his goodness because he called us out of darkness into His wonderful light!
Hannah, your insights spoke to my heart today. Thank you for sharing!
Your insights spoke to my heart today. Thank you for sharing!
~Despite all their grumbling, the people do seem eager to obey. However, they are short-sighted and impatient. Ask God to help me continue to mature in my faith so that I will be patient, wait for His timing and avoid grumbling and complaining when life is hard.
~Accept the help and advice of others as I serve the Lord. Moses had help from Aaron, Hur and Jethro. Also, those he assigned to hear the smaller cases.
~Be satisfied! As Wendy emphasized this in her teaching today, the Lord spoke to my heart about this regarding my desire to focus on hospitality and fellowship this year.
Something Old
The Desert of Sin was literally the Desert of Zin….nothing to do with sin…..but in actuality it certainly turned out to be full of sin and willfulness. Our very sin nature keeps drawing us back to self when the Lord wants us drawn unto Himself.
Something New
Exodus 17:1, “At the Lord’s command…..” The people were following the instructions of the Lord, but they were still in dire straights and in great thirst. It is entirely possible to be doing exactly what He wants and to be well within His will, and still experience trials and tribulations. I think this often confuses us. With age and experience I’ve slowly come to find this truth helpful and reassuring. I love the verse, “….In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33).
Something To Do
Exodus 17:4, “So Moses cried out to the Lord.”
“One of Moses’ most characteristic and praiseworthy traits was that he took his difficulties to the Lord.” (Kaiser). THIS is my To Do for today and for the days to come.
Love the something to do!
Sabbath day dedicated to the Lord. 16:25
A day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath day set apart for the Lord. 16:23
The Sabbath is the Lord’s gift to you. 16:29
I have to be honest but up until a few months ago I had no idea what Sabbath meant. I had thought it just meant we weren’t to work on Sundays. I recently did Priscilla Shirer’s Bible study called “Breathe” right before Christmas and it completely rocked my world. It was so revealing and God taught me SO much. I had no idea what Sabbath truly meant and I learned that most if not all of the struggles I had been dealing with forever were a result of me not honoring the Sabbath. It was such a clear cut and direct answer from God. There is SO much more to Sabbath rest,it truly is a gift from the Lord. He provides double that 6th day to get you through the 7th just like the manna. I can’t recommend the study more, it’s a short book but It will change your view on everything. I went through the study with Proverbs 31, but you can still purchase the weekly videos through Lifeway I believe. It is such an important biblical lesson to learn and live out. I’m still working on it daily.
