When Obedience Gets Tough

So, Moses lifted his hand to the sky, and a deep darkness covered the entire land of Egypt for three days.
Exodus 10:22

My Takeaways

Something Old

These are your instructions for eating this meal: Be fully dressed, wear your sandals, and carry your walking stick in your hand. Eat the meal with urgency, for this the LORD’s Passover. Exodus 12:11

This reminds of

However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. Matt. 24:36

I have to be ready, looking for him.

Something New

Moses and Aaron continued to obey God’s instructions even though Pharaoh was not moved by God’s plagues.

What is my response to obedience when things don’t seem to be changing?

  • Does my intensity and passion lessen?
  • Do I intervene to make things happen? (manipulation)
  • Do I ignore God and the assignment for a while?

Moses kept going. Kept obeying. Kept meeting with God for instructions.

Something to Do

Keep going. Keep obeying. Keep meeting with God for instructions.

  1. The Lord kept His promise. Exodus 12:42

My typical fleshly response would be to quit when things are hard or they aren’t changing. To bail out, give up, and move on. I’ve tried this many times in a certain area of my life and the last time God had big things to say to me about it. He opened my eyes in a big way. He revealed to me what my duty and priority is as his child, a believer and a wife. God told me exactly what I needed to do and how He wanted me to respond from then on out. Do I fall off or forget or tend to try to go that route again? Yes, I do. But this time it’s different. I remember God’s promises and my only option is obedience at that point. God has saved me from destruction. It’s arrogant to think I have any power to change anything or anyone. I have never threatened to quit again since then. God showed me that I have to be patient in the waiting. He is working, restoring and arranging things to bring this area of my life back to life. I still get the urge sometimes to quit, but I remember His promises.

    1. I noted too that God kept His promise. I am grateful that we follow a God who keeps His promises!

    2. Thanks for sharing Chris Tomlin’s song- Yes And Amen. I hadn’t heard it before but enjoyed the lyrics. I appreciate how you share songs that have the messages we discuss. God bless you!

  2. Pharaoh kept trying to get Moses to compromise on leaving Egypt. The men could go but no one else. Men women and children could go but no animals. Moses stuck to what God has commanded him and did not compromise or negotiate. This challenged me…do I compromise with the enemy on what God has commanded? Do I negotiate with Satan on what I know God has said? Fully obey – every time. Compromise only leads to trouble.

I love the picture of the Passover and it’s forward image of God seeing Jesus’ blood covering me and allowing death to pass from me. So grateful for the Savrifical Lamb who covers me from death!

    1. I noted too that God kept His promise. I am grateful that we follow a God who keeps His promises!

    2. I had some of the same thoughts about Pharoah. I thought of it as him trying to bargain with God and that he wanted to be the one in control of who went, what they took and when they could go. Then my takeaway was: Don’t bargain with God. Submit to Him and do as He commands me.

  3. Let Him lead! This is something I need to learn to do with God and my husband. When my husband and I were married if he and I were traveling somewhere but in separate cars ( we do that a lot because of our schedules) God was very clear that I was to follow him. I’m not now or have I ever been a follower…Wendy description of getting in the passing lane and going around hit me hard! God has been telling me for days now that ” my husband is my leader so let him lead! Wow God is so good only God could have known that all these years later just when I needed a reminder that He would use this study and Wendy to do that. Thank you Jesus for Your mercy and grace!

  4. The people of Israel had lived in Egypt 430 years. But the last day of the 430th year, God kept His promise and brought His people out of Egypt.
    430 years! Wow!
This put my current wait – 3 yrs- into perspective. I need to trust that God is still working in my wait. I need to keep asking him for instructions and obeying.
