The Enemy’s Oppression

“We must make a plan to keep them from growing even more. If we don’t, and if war breaks out, they will join our enemies and fight against us. Then they will escape from the country.”
Exodus 1:10

My Takeaways

Something Old

Eventually there will be people who know nothing of me, but I pray they know of my God.

Exodus 1:8

Something New

We have an enemy. He is real. His name is Satan.

He wants to oppress, enslave and keep us from growing.

  • Oppress us with our past.
  • Enslave us with our sin.
  • Stunt us with ignorance.

Here are our answers to Satan’s oppression.

  • I am forgiven.
Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord. (NIV) Acts 3:19
  • I am a slave, but to righteousness.
You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.(NIV)  Romans 6:18
  • I am teachable.
But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true–it is not a lie. So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ. 1 John 2:27

He doesn’t want us to grow, because he knows we can defeat him.

Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. (NASB) 1 John 4:4b

He has plans. (Ephesians 6)

Something to Do

Continue to remind Satan who he is messing with.

  1. Exodus 3&4 – God sets his plan to rescue his people into motion. He meets with Moses in the burning bush to give him his assignment. Moses protests 5 times and pleads with God to use someone else. I love verses 3:18-22 because God gives Moses the ending….it’s all going to go end well. Moses still protests but God is so patient and reassuring. He gives Moses tools to use and Moses still isn’t sure. God tells him in 4:12 it’s time to go – I’ll be with you and instruct you. Moses is pretty bold to plead again with God. God becomes angry with moses but still provides for his fears and brings Aaron on the scene.
My takeaway from these chapters was that God is so faithful, patient, compassionate and loving. He doesn’t give up on me when I’m stuck in fear. He gives me assurances and tools but still wants to tonatep and and do what’s he’s assigned me to do. Move out in obedience to Him!

  2. ~Something New: How did Aaron know where Moses was and k ow to go meet him? Had God spoken to Aaron too? Did Aaron already know he was to be a spokesman for Moses? Had he questioned God about this or been reluctant to obey?
~ Something To Do: Is there something God is asking me to do that I am making excuses not to do or dragging my feet on? Yes! He has shown me something I need to do.
~ “Here I am” ( Ex3:4b) For a number of years now I have noted whenever I encounter these words in the Bible. Following are the other places I have seen them up to this point:
    Gen 22 (2x); Ex31:11; Gen46:2b)

  3. Today’s reading was a big revelation and answered prayerfor me.

    Exodus 2:23-25
God hears my cries. He remembers His promises, He keeps His promises and He acts when it’s the right time. My job is to pray and trust Him.
Who am I Lord? What if ________?
This is so like me with the What if’s?

The conversation between God and Moses is so powerful to me today. I can almost feel the power through the words. It’s so awesome! I’m really loving reading through the word this time. I’ve grown a lot since the last time. I wonder what God’s audible voice sounded like?

Well my big revelation was from the What if verse.
I have been praying about homeschooling my daughter next school year for months now. There are a lot of factors that go into it that are big life changes. There are so many what if’s about taking her out of a Christian private school (where I also work) to homeschool her. If I make choices based on the negative what if’s, I would never do anything, move forward or grow in my faith. I would be stuck in fear.
But…what if it’s amazing? What if it’s the best decision for us? What if it is exactly Gods will, and I missed it because I didn’t trust and was afraid? God is asking me to trust Him. He says
Now go! I will be with you as you speak (homeschool) and I will instruct you in what to say (do). Exodus 4:12,15

Ok Father! I trust you! I was on the cusp of my decision and I made it today. I am going to do it and trust God to handle all my fears, doubts and worries about it.
Praise God, I am so excited!

  4. Something Old
Moses’ mother gave up her precious child into the care of her God. She had to trust Him to do for him. We are called to do the same. No matter the circumstance. We may not have to literally place them in a papyrus basket in a river, but given today’s world….we surely have to place them in risky places and rely on His care and guidance.

    Something New
Exodus 3:5. This is the first time the Bible uses the word, “holy” with reference to God.

Exodus 3:7-8. This is the first time God ever called Israel, “My people.”

God’s ways are perfect. His placing of His people in the land of Egypt enabled them to prosper and grow in number without assimilation, a “watering down”of their lineage. Had they stayed in Canaan they likely would have intermarried and brought in all kinds of idols and idol worship. Egyptians were known for being extremely elitist and they would have nothing to do with the Israelites. That worked in their favor. God worked it in their favor.

So much wonderful detail in the explanation of the burning bush. It wasn’t unheard of for a bush to ignite, but it was not normal for it not to be consumed! This could easily be a picture of God’s chosen people……afflicted, but not destroyed, because God was in the midst of them. The more intense the affliction, the more they grew.

    Something To Do
I love the verse….Exodus 3:5, “….Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Of course it wasn’t the actual ground that was holy, but the presence of the Almighty God, Himself. We are to enter His sanctuary with reverence in our hearts. We are ALWAYS to enter His presence with the reverent awareness of His Holiness even if that is in the comfort of our own home and our quiet meeting with Him in communion. How very humbling.

  5. Exodus 3:4 “When the Lord saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called him from the middle of the Bush, Moses! Moses!”

I really never thought about this before, but it wasn’t until Moses notice the Bush on fire that God spoke out of it. God was waiting for Moses to come to him. When Moses went back to look at the bush God spoke. Moses had to come to God first. He had to seek Him.

God’s greatest desire is me! God invites me to participate in his promises, become his partner and ultimately be His people. But I must first seek Him like Moses did.

Something To Do: Take notice and then listen to what God is doing to get my attention, because God is not silent.
