What Do I Really Want To Know

“I am God, the God of your father,” the voice said. “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make your family into a great nation.
Genesis 46:3

My Takeaways

Something Old

Would I want to know exactly what was going to happen in my life?

God told Jacob (I love that He knew Jacob was afraid, and spoke to that fear.)

  • I am your God.
  • I will make your family into great nation.
  • You will die in Egypt, but Joseph will be with you.

God didn’t tell Jacob of the slavery of his lineage and the suffering they would endure.

If we know it all, we would

  • Miss the blessing of getting to know Jesus intimately during the days of suffering.
  • Miss the opportunity of witnessing His power, because we would try to prepare for things in our own way.
  • Miss the miracle of the victory.
  • Miss experiencing the surprising adventures with the God immeasurably more.

Something New

Pharaoh was very hospitable to Joseph’s family.

Something to do

Trust God’s timing and plan for my life.

  1. Wondered today when the brothers told Jacob the real story of Joseph getting to Egypt or if Joseph told him when they got there. I also wondered why Joseph called out to his brothers not to quarrel on the way.

    1. ~I never thought about how/when Jacob would find out the whole story about how Joseph to Egypt.
~I also noted that Joseph told his brothers not to quarrel on the way. One thought I had was that they may have been jealous because Joseph gave Benjamin 5 changes of clothes and 300 pieces of silver while only giving the others a change of clothes. And I wondered why Joseph did it that way. I realize that Benjamin was his only full brother but it seems it would perpetuate the jealousy among his brothers that started back when Jacob showed favoritism towards Joseph.

    2. I think Joseph told his brothers not to quarrel because they knew their father was going to have to know the real story sooner or later. He probably didn’t want them to start arguing over who was to blame. They were all at fault. Joseph probably wanted the past to be the past and move forward.

  2. Something New- Jacob blesses Pharaoh. Gen 47:7

I felt Joseph was hard on the Egyptians because he took their land and livestock just so they could get food to eat. It makes me grateful to have food on my table everyday.

    1. When I ate lunch yesterday, I thought of the severe famine and it made me really grateful that we have such an abundance of food and that God always provides.

  3. Thanks Wendy for the great lesson! So many songs popped in my head this morning! Today’s playlist:

“Your Grace is Enough” Matt Maher
    “I Will Follow” Chris Tomlin
    “Trust in You” Lauren Daigle
** “Where He Leads Me” Twila Paris
** “Go Without Knowing” Sandi Patty

**The last two may not be as familiar to you, but they spoke straight to my heart this morning.**

  4. As I mentioned on yesterday’s post my husband is now on hospice. He is doing okay for the moment but as a nurse I know that he will continue to decline. But, I don’t really want to know what is going to happen and when. I just want to enjoy each moment that we have together. I am not worrying, I have to admit that if God completely healed my husband I would not be upset. I do not expect that to happen, but I am not terrified either.

      1. I didn’t see this post until this morning. I just prayed for you and your husband this morning. May God grant you His grace and peace this day! He is holding you both in the palm of His hand.

  5. Dear Wendy,
what a great lesson-tears filled my eyes because your message is right on. I want to be a faith walker. God and Jesus have been so good to me lately as I have gone through so many heartaches and troubles and I see the great blessings they have given me. They have protected me and my family. Praise God for eternity for He is good!

  6. I am one who stresses a lot about the future. I sometimes have thought well if I just knew what to expect, I could plan better. But then, I know that I would just stress more and think about everything negative that is coming, and not enjoy even the good days. Most importantly, I would only rely on my knowledge and no longer on God. He would no longer be a big part of my life, and that would destroy me.

  7. I wonder if Jacob did know what was ahead. Remember what God told Abraham back in Genesis 15:12-16. I wonder if this was passed on by word of mouth to each generation?

You got to love the story of Joseph. He has the perfect opportunity to get revenge, but he does not do so. Joseph’s dealings with his brothers brought them to repentance, and caused them to be reconciled as a family. Joseph shows nothing but love toward his brothers. Just like Christ himself. Joseph’s life foreshadows the coming of the Messiah. Don’t you love how Christ is all over scripture. Both Joseph and Jesus names start with J— :-), I’m trying to put smiles on your faces on that one. But seriously both were hated by their brothers, rejected as rulers over their brothers, conspired against and sold for silver, condemned though innocent, and raised from humiliation to glory by the power of God. Now that’s some good stuff!

  8. Never researched Benjamin nor his descendents until now, found it very interesting.
Know Jacob spoke a blessing on his life and future generations even into the latter days in Revelations 7:8 and 21:12-13. In the Jewish culture, the naming of their children always had a special meaning as did Benjamin’s (Son of my right hand) and including his blessing. “A ravenous wolf, devour his prey, divide the spoil”; pretty strong words spoken over him and his offspring. What did God see in Benjamin; a warrior. Also we see in King Saul our sin nature and in the Apostle Paul aka Saul our sin nature changed by Jesus Christ through faith. We too are warriors, soldiers of the cross.
“Scripture shows that at least four great people came from Benjamin’s tribe, even though it was the smallest of the twelve tribes (1 Samuel 9:21). First, Ehud, a great warrior who delivered Israel from Moab (Judges 3:12–30). Next, Saul becomes the first king of Israel (1 Samuel 9:15–27). In later Jewish history, many Jews lived in Persia, God used Mordecai and Esther, from the tribe of Benjamin, to deliver the Jews from death (Esther 2:5–7). Finally, in the New Testament the apostle Paul affirms he, too, came from Benjamin. “I say then, has God cast away His people? Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin” (Romans 11:1). Paul repeats this affirmation in Philippians 3:4–5”
