The Purpose Of The Book
But these are written, so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that believing in Him you have life by the power of His name.
John 20:31
My Takeaways
Something Old
Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared! Luke 24:31
I know they actually saw Him, but I love when I “suddenly” see Jesus around me and in me. When I’ve done something out of the spiritual rather than the natural, I “see” Him.
Something New
The purpose of the Book: (Book of John)
- Continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah— have no doubt
- Experience life
Mounce: life zóé (dzo-ay’) life, physical or spiritual; with 173, eternal life
Thayer:
Life
- the state of one who is possessed of vitality or is animate
- every living soul
Life
- of the absolute fullness of life, both essential and ethical, which belongs to God, and through him both to the hypostatic “logos” and to Christ in whom the “logos” put on human nature
- life real and genuine, a life active and vigorous, devoted to God, blessed, in the portion even in this world of those who put their trust in Christ, but after the resurrection to be consummated by new accessions (among them a more perfect body), and to last for ever.
Something to Do
Ask God to reveal Himself when I’m feeling in doubt.
It is hard to imagine doubting that Jesus rise from the dead if i had seen him. But in today’s reading some of the disciples doubted. Matt 28:16 says they doubted while they we’re worshipping with Him on the mountain. I have areas of doubt in my life that I need to surrender to the Lord and walk in faith. Believe Him at His Word and have faith!
I love that Jesus explained all the prophecies to them on emmaus road. What a teaching that would have been!
I made Luke 24:48 my prayer…Open my mind to understand the Scriptures. I can’t understand His Word without His revelation.
My Takeaway: Jesus Is Indeed Alive!
Something Old: “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone, everywhere” (Mark 16:15).
As a follower of Christ, I too have been given the same calling, a great responsibility, a great commission to share the Good News of salvation-the Gospel-to everyone. With that knowledge it becomes my responsiblity everywhere I go and with everyone I meet to be faithful to my commission.
Something New: Jesus’ response to Peter when Peter asks about what will happen to John is a classic, “Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You follow me.” I often worry about others and their relationship with the Lord, thinking that I am saved, and “they” are not… Or I wonder why someone seems like they are so blessed, and I think that I am not. I think I need to ponder on what Jesus said to Peter more often. I think he is probably saying the same to me, today. “What is that to you? You follow me.” I need to stop worrying so much about others and start worrying instead about myself and simply follow Jesus!
Something To Do: Become an active participant in Jesus’ Great Commission. Make sure I follow Jesus is everything I do.
