The Hope of the Tomb

Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a long sheet of clean linen cloth. He placed it in his own new tomb, which had been carved out of the rock.
Matthew 27:59-60a

My Takeaways

Something Old

Though the guards stood at attention, they could not stop the resurrection. The tomb was destined to be empty.

The empty tomb is symbol of the life Jesus died to give. He was, is, and always be our hope. We can’t ever forget that!

Something New

In the day of Jesus’ death it was customary for the crucified to remain on the cross for days exposing them the elements of the weather and birds of prey. However, Jesus was crucified during the time of Passover, when Jews celebrated God’s rescue of from Egypt, and no one wanted to leave the bodies on the cross.

Something to Do

Thank you, Jesus, for the cross and the empty tomb.

  1. Mark 15:43 says that Joseph took a risk and asked for Jesus’ body. John 19:38 says that Joseph had been a secret follower of Jesus because he feared the Jewish leaders. He was part of the high council and feared to make his belief in Jesus known. After jesus’ death he took a stand…a big one and asked for Jesus’ body. It was a risk for him he was outing himself and didn’t know what the ramifications would be. I wonder if he regretted his secrecy when Jesus was alive? I can relate to Joseph. I can live my belief in Jesus more secretly around certain groups of people. I might fear their reactions or fear losing their approval or friendship. I want to be a Joseph and take risks for Jesus and let go of the secrecy to live fully and isn’t for my savior!

  2. Loved spurgeon’s thoughts on Mark 15:43…
“Of course, Joseph took a risk with this request. He risked Pilate’s animosity or scorn, but it mattered little to Joseph. “Is there no holy chivalry in you? Can it be so, that, because God has dealt so well with you, and trusted you so generously, you will repay him by denying his Son, violating your conscience, and turning your back on truth; and all for the sake of being in the fashion? I know it may seem hard to receive the cold shoulder in society, or to have the finger of scorn pointed at you; but to bow before this selfish dread is scarcely worthy of a man, and utterly disgraceful to a Christian man.” (Spurgeon)

  3. MyTakeaways: “Up from the Grave He arose!”

Something Old: The absolutely greatest piece of History known to man, Jesus rose from the dead. He did what no other man has ever done.Jesus’ resurrection fulfills his purpose. The cycle of sin and death has finally been broken.

Something New: Don’t be afraid,” the angel said. “Jesus isn’t here. He has been raised from the dead, just as He said would happen” (Matthew 28:5, 6) Jesus defeated death. He destroyed the power of sin. He disarmed Satan. But wait! There is more. Jesus really is God. Jesus really is the Risen Lord. I know Him and have a real relationship with Him. Today Jesus is busy preparing a place for me, so that I might be where He is. The resurrection of Christ guarantees my resurrection! His resurrection was and is the hope for all mankind.

    Something To Do: Believe!
