Held Together By A Cause
(Herod and Pilate, who had been enemies before, become friends that day.)
Luke 23:12
My Takeaways
Something Old
Dangerous are the days when we fall in “with the crowd.” Hatred can spread quickly. It is infectious. If we aren’t careful, we can become part of something we had no intention of being part of.
We can become responsible for something we will regret later. Listen to the words of the crowd, “And all the people yelled back, ‘We will take responsibility for his death-we and our children.‘” (Matthew 27:25) Our actions have consequences that effect more than just ourselves.
Something New
Herod was tetrarch of Galilee (Tetrarch signifies ruler of fourth of a kingdom.). Pilate was the governor of Rome. The exact cause for their rivalry isn’t known. However, it is speculated the enmity began when Pilate had Galileans murdered as they were offering sacrifices at the Temple. (Luke 13:1-2) Regardless of their animosity toward each other, civil unity against a common cause turned enemies into friends…if only for a day.
Something to Do
Champion the cause of Christ.
I was struck in today’s reading by all the ways that Herod and Pilate did things to make other people happy or pacify the crowds instead of doing what they knew was right. I was convicted that i too can do or not do what I know is right or best because I want to please people. My drive should be to please God and not man. I want to do what He desires not what man desires. I want to fear God and not man.
I also was overwhelmed today by all that Jesus endured in order to save me. I was convicted of how lightly I take my salvation. I am praising him today in humble thanks for all he endured so that I can have freedom and eternal life!
You can tell that Pilate truly did not think that Jesus deserved to die, and that at first he wanted no part in it. I wonder how his story might have been different if he had listened to his wife’s warning and had the courage to at least withdraw his own personal responsibility in the death of Jesus.
My Takeaways: The Unjust Trail of Jesus
Something Old: The trail of Jesus, how unjust! He did no wrong! Jesus did nothing and said nothing to His accusers. This was proof enough that His life was not taken but given. He was born to die and these things had to happen to fulfill prophecy.
Something New: John 18:38 “‘What is truth?” Pilot asked..”‘ What an ironic statement. Pilate couldn’t see the very Truth right before him! Jesus is Truth! Pilate was like many people today. Because Jesus is truth I have a standard for my moral behavior. Ignoring the truth leads to undesired consequences.
Something To Do: Realize Jesus is Truth, my King. I must always listen, trust, and obey My King Jesus Christ.
