What’s My Lump?
But the jar he was making did not turn out as he had hoped, so he crushed it into a lump of clay again and started over.
Jeremiah 18:4
My Takeaways
Something Old
Jeremiah 17:8
When we stay planted by the riverbank of God’s Word, where our roots will grow deep, we will never stop producing fruit. WOW!
Something New
- The potter recognized the lump.
- The potter crushed His creation.
- The potter started over with the master piece.
Power was manifested in his manipulation of the clay.
Israel’s lump was disobedience. Idol worship.

Takeaways: God Is Always In Control
Something Old: Jeremiah 18:1-6. The Potter and the Clay, so agree with Wendy on the power of this analogy. Though God was talking about Israel, the truth in these verses so much apply to me. God received me in my old sinful ways and then He begins to reshape and mold me into a vessel that He can use, my old nature is still with me even though I’m saved, but He slowly and surely starts a work on me for His use and glory. He is the Great Potter and He is an expert at what He does. Sometimes the clay may need be season a bit to become more workable and useable, the potter may lay that clay aside for a time, but he never throws it away. Just like God. He never forgets or abandons me. God is the Master Potter and He is shaping, molding and forming me at this very time and He will be until the day of Jesus Christ. I loved your lesson today, Wendy. I must agree this is just good stuff!
Something New: Jeremiah 17:9 “The human heart is the most deceitful above all things. And desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” I so often give advice that sounds something like this just “trust your heart” or “let your heart be your guide.” This is not good advice. Why? Because the heart and its thoughts are defective. It cannot be relied upon to discern good and evil. Only when I change my heart by having a relationship with Jesus Christ can it turn from evil. That relationship can only develop and flourish when I know who he is. I learn who he is from reading His Word. Knowing God and who he is can change my defective heart and change my stubborn will so that I can follow God. The only thing that will change the heart is the Gospel of Christ. He is my hope for ultimate change!
Something To Do: Let God have his way with me.
Beautiful teaching! I love this analogy.
