The Dare Prayer

O God, I beg two favors from you; let me have them before I die.
Proverbs 30:7

My Takeaways

Something Old

O God, I beg two favors from you; let me have them before I die.

Give me only what I need

  • More makes us think we don’t need God
  • Less might cause us to sin (lie, cheat, and steal) to gain what we think we need.

Remove

  • In asking God to give us only what we need, we give Him permission to remove what we don’t need, and keep away anything that would keep us away from Him.

Something New

King Lemuel’s mother taught him about the Proverbs 31 woman.

Something to Do

Do I dare to pray this prayer?

  1. Oh my, this brought to mind one of the prayers I say each morning: ‘Lord, show me just so much (neither more nor less) about myself as I need for doing thy will now.’ From The Collected Letters of C.S. Lewis, Volume III Compiled in Yours, Jack

  2. My Takeaways: God is the Power behind all Wisdom.

Something Old: Looks like we finished the book of Proverbs today. This book begins by telling me that fearing the Lord is the foundation of knowledge (1:7) and it ends with what happens when I fear the Lord (31:30). The only knowledge I need to have is to “fear the Lord.” In other words honor and respect God, live in awe of his power, and obey his word. Faith in God should be the controlling principal for my understanding of the world, my attitudes, and my actions. When I fear the Lord I can live with enjoyment, success, honor, and work.

Something New: King Lemuel’s mother taught him well. She loved her son enough enough to communicate life lessons to him. She gives him wise advise on how to stay away from promiscuous women (v.3). She warns him about the danger of alcohol and how it can ruin a good man (v. 4-7). The king’s mother tells her son to speak up for those without a voice (v. 8-9). She encourages her son in the matter of choosing a godly wife and the advantages that result from it. What a difference our world would be today if people would heed to her advice. Live it out and share it with their children. Just think of how different our world would look today if all sons took the advice wise mothers.

Something To Do: Live according to God’s desires. Listen to the advice of godly parents.
