Everyone Needs That Kind Of Friend…
Iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.
Proverbs 27:17
My Takeaways
Something Old
Real friends don’t flatter, they sharpen.
To flatter friends is to lay a trap at their feet. (Proverbs 29:5)
The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense. (Proverbs 27:9)
We need the feedback, encouragement, counsel, and checks and balances of others.
Quickens his ingenuity, enlivens his affections, strengthens his judgment, excites him to virtuous and useful actions, and makes him, in all respects, a better man. ~ Benson
Something New
Not everyone is equipped to sharpen.
Something to Do
My Takeawise: More words for the wise
Something Old: Proverbs 26:17
“Interfering in someone else’s argument is as foolish as yanking a dog’s ears.” Hallelujah to that! I am still working on this. As my children grew older and have found spouses of their own it has been hard for me to keep quiet when they argue around me. I have learned that interfering always hurts the one interfering (me). These days I try really hard to stay out of things that are not my business! Reading this Proverb today was a good reminder as I struggle to keep to myself when others are arguing.
Something New: So many Proverbs to learn from and spoke to me, not sure which to focus on. They are all so good. 25:6-7 “Don’t demand an audience with the king or push for a place among the great. It’s better to wait for an invitation to the head table then to be sent away in public disgrace.” Sounds like one of Jesus’s parables found in Luke. I don’t need to impress anyone, except the Lord. By impressing the Lord I can learn to serve others with the gifts that God has given me. When others see my life, it alone will bring attention to me. When that happens I can share the Lord with them.
Something to Do: Stay out of other people’s buisness. Keep Solomon’s words of wisdom close to my heart and live them out.
Nodding my head in agreement and praying for discipline to not interfere ….especially in my adult children’s contentions. Each day I lay each of them on God’s altar and ask that I remember that I must quiet my heart AND my mouth. (I cover them in my prayers…God protects them in His power!)
Thanks for your continuing comments. I read them every day (that you post)…even though I do not always find time to reply. Blessings on you.
Amen lkennedy and jreed!!
I’m smiling because we took a family road trip (vacation- 23 hours away from home) with my 3 children, their spouses, and my 9 grandchildren ( ages 1-13) On top of being on the road together we are also living under the same roof. The biggest challenge I have faced these last 10 days is knowing when to keep my mouth shut… we head back home on Saturday, so far so good. I continue to pray to God to help me in this area.
