The Company We Keep
Don’t befriend angry people or associate with hot-tempered people, or you will learn to be like them and endanger your soul.
Proverbs 22:24-25
My Takeaways
Something Old
God chooses the greatest friends:
- Ask God for godly friends
- Lay aside what I think I need a friend to be
- Hear and listen to His prompting
- Leave myself open to be surprised by God
Something New
Something to Do
My Takeaways: More words for the Wise
Something Old: Solomon shared more sayings that have already been covered. Defending the poor, seeking after wisdom, speaking the truth, honoring parents, and avoiding drunkenness and sexual immorality, dealing with laziness, friendships, etc. Much to say about these things so I need to heed his advice.
Something New: “A little extra sleep, a little more slumber… then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber” (24:33, 34). Work is a good thing. God instituted work in the beginning, at creation. Work is a gift of God. It has a way of giving me a sense of purpose, productivity, and dignity. Work is necessary to give my life completeness. Therefore, I should do my best and not complain about it. Since work is a blessing from the Lord, then I should work with a thankful heart. I can take pleasure in it. Though work is difficult, at times, and has its challenges, I can enjoy it. I should also work to the best of my ability in a way that pleases the Lord.
Christians should be the best workers. I should work hard. I should be reliable and trustworthy to do a good job, even when no one is watching. I should exhibit the best attitude with my co-workers and my boss. Work is another way for me to reflect well on God. Having in mind a biblical perspective of work, helps me to understand why laziness, apathy, or inactivity are displeasing, even offensive, to God.
Something To Do: Work with a happy heart, no complaining.
