Who Do I Exalt?
About that time David’s son Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, began boasting, “I will make myself king.”
1 Kings 1:5a
My Takeaways
Something Old
Adonijah exalted himself. How often do I exalt myself?
God exalts, we do not.
For exaltation comes neither from the east nor from the west nor from the south. But God is the Judge: He puts down one, and exalts another. (NKJV) Psalm 75:6-7
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. (NKJV) James 4:10
Something New
The mule was something special in ancient Israel. “Since Hebraic law forbade crossbreeding (Leviticus 19:19), mules had to be imported and were therefore very expensive. So while the common people rode donkeys, the mule was reserved for royalty.” ~ Dilday
Something to Do
Stay humble, in all circumstances, whether they are favorable and unfavorable.
My Take Aways: I must discipline my children, grandchildren, etc. carefully while they are young, so that they will grow into self-disciplined adults.
Something Old: David thoroughly prepares Israel for building a magnificent temple for the Name of the Lord. He stays close to God to the end. Keeping a close relationship with God.
Something New: 1 Kings 1:6a ” now his father, King David, had never discipline him at any time, even by asking, ‘Why are you doing that?'” Adonijah, wants to be King. Adonijah knows no better, he is a spoiled brat and use to getting his own way. David was a great King, but again a poor excuse for a father. So the results of that failure to discipline, show up again. Because of David’s lack of disciplining his own child he kind of caused this whole mess to happen. Adonijah was use to doing whatever he wanted so of course he is not going to pay attention to God’s wishes. Adonijah isn’t interested in the position to further God’s kingdom, but rather to establish his own kingdom. He doesn’t care about building a temple for the Name of the Lord; his plan includes making a name for himself. He is a self seeker! He has always gotten his way in the past so why should it be any different now.
Something To Do: Remember my God given responsibilities and make sure I give time to mold my children, grandchildren, etc. spiritual well-being. Remember don’t lack discipling when discipling is due otherwise the next generation might also build an attitude of entitlement like Adonijah.
