When Obsession Leads to Domination

Amnon became so obsessed with Tamar that he became ill.  She was a virgin, and Amnon thought he could never have her.
2 Samuel 13:2

My Takeaways

Something Old

Obsession: the domination of one’s thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea

If our thoughts become dominated with the wrong things we may be:

  • Tempted to involve someone else in wrong doing (the mob effect is powerful) (2 Samuel 13:3)
  • Led to make wrong choices (2 Samuel 13:11)
  • Become deaf to reasonable thinking (2 Samuel 13:12-14)

If our thoughts become dominated with the right things we may be:

  • Tempted to involve someone else in right actions
  • Led to make right decisions
  • Attentive and willing listen to reasonable thinking

Something New

That which dominates our mind will dictate our behavior.

Something To Do

Be obsessed with God and the things of God…  His holiness, His righteousness, and His Truth

  1. My Takeaways: History repeats itself. First Eli, then Samuel, and now David-very ineffective fathers. They spared the rod and spoiled the child.

Something Old: God’s predictions are coming true- David’s family would suffer. The consequences of his sin with Bathsheba are now playing out. His household is rebelling against him.

Something New: Absalom: Was he justified for doing what he did since David failed to act? Didn’t rape warrant a death penalty?(Deuteronomy 22:26). Why did David refuse to see Absalom? Was he reluctant to forgive? Had he forgotten how God forgave him? Isn’t it always best to resolve ones differences and not let them drag on? David let this drag on way to long. He finally does reconcile though, with a kiss, but probably a few years too late. The seeds of bitterness that had been sown had already been planted. David was not an evil person, but just like me, he made mistakes—and those mistakes had serious consequences. Absalom names his daughter Tamar, just like David named his son Nathan. Do you think this was to show their love and respect for these individuals? Lots of lessons to learn through today’s reading.

Something To Do: Forgive- remember God offers forgiveness. I cannot experience forgiveness until I admit my sins and confess them to God. David did this, but I’m not sure Absalom did. Take time to train and discipline when needed, or face the consequences. Guard my heart against sin. Teach my offspring God’s ways, by living in obedience to God.
