Hoard the Word

For I have stayed on God’s paths; I have followed his ways and not turned aside. I have not departed from his commands, but have treasured his words more than daily food.
Job 23:11-12

Attend to carefully. Guard.

  1. Something Old
Job 23:10. “But He knows where I am going.” This comforts me in that I often realize I do NOT know where I am going in this life. It is uncertain and I cannot see the future. But He does. What a relief. My very real GPS. (God’s positioning system)

    Something New
Chapter 24 is confusing. Every time I read it. I recognize Job’s frustration that God does not appear to punish the wicked immediately, or always protect the innocent. No where does he indicate that he considers himself to be one of the wicked, as his accusers have stated. But he laments, just as we often do…..or at least, as I often have……why do the guilty seem to get away with so much? Towards the end of the chapter he turns a bit of a corner in his thinking and settles on the conclusion that perhaps God allows the evil to prosper in this life, but their punishment may be worse in the next life.

    Something To Do
Continue to be grateful that I know where to find God. Even when there is silence from heaven, He has not moved. It is then that I must simply persevere, relying on His promises and His faithfulness.

  2. My Takeaways:
Job 23:10-12 “But he knows where I am going and when he test me, I will come out as pure as gold. For I have stayed on God’s paths; I have followed his ways and not turn aside. I have not departed from his commands but have treasured his words more than daily food.”

    Something Old:
Job continues to show great faith upon a gloomy outcome. Job admitted that he could not get through to God, yet clung to the confidence that God was still over this crisis.

    Something New:
Job is still following God, “for I have stayed on his paths”, even through everything he has endured. He continues to trust God and in the end he knows all will be good. “I will come out as pure as gold..”
He treasures God’s words. This makes me wonder if God spoke to him often before this situation came about? I doubt if any of the Bible had been written yet so he wasn’t getting his words from the Bible. I wonder if this is why he is so confused now- since he doesn’t hear from God anymore? He certainly is clinging onto those words. “but have treasured his words more than daily food.” Job is not letting go. It is obvious the love he has for God.

    Something To Do:
Always trust God in all circumstances. Don’t jump to conclusions, I don’t always know the whole story even though I think I do. I can’t count how many times I have been disappointed in something a friend said or did for me. Later finding out my friend had just been through her own crisis unbeknownst to me. Instead of getting all bent out of proportion I need to be patient until I know all details. Remember God is a fair judge, I need not worry if someone is getting what’s owed to them because God never makes mistakes. The outside situations are not always reliable to what the inside battle really is. Remember God’s promises, what has he spoken to me through his word? I must continue to have the faith to trust and believe that “…we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28.

    1. Oops, I think I should have listened to Wendy and read her notes before I dived into my own comments. I had no idea we would be focusing on the same verse.

  3. After reading the story of Job thus far, I’m wondering if the “patience of Job” that we use today so often in our conversations, refers to his “patience” with God in response to his trials from Satan, or his “patience” with his “friends” as they continue to rail on…..

Dear Lord, please show me how to have that patience.

  4. Just in case anyone was wondering what the verse was about being refined into gold:

6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,
7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith-more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire-may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 1:6-7, ESV)
