The Purpose of the Word

They read from the Book of the Law of God and clearly explained the meaning of what was being read, helping the people understand each passage.
Nehemiah 8:8

My Takeaways

Something Old

We often try to conceal our sin, or confess it; but don’t change our behavior. We have to allow the Word of God convict and correct.

The Word convicts us of sins, and if we allow, it will correct behavior and change us.

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.  2 Timothy 3:16

  • Teaching: applied Christian doctrine as it applies to lifestyle
  • Reproof: inner conviction focuses on God
  • Correction: restoration to the proper condition
  • Training: instructing someone to reach maturity

Why?

  • God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. (2 Timothy 3:17)

Something New

Ezra was a scribe – someone who copied the Bible by hand. Oh, how he must have loved and revered the Word of God.

Something to Do

Allow God’s Word to do its perfecting work in me.

  1. Nehemiah 8:8 stood out for me today as well and gave me such hope. I’ll be honest, I’ve been struggling with understanding/following the readings the past few weeks. But Wendy’s lessons have been so helpful. So when I read this verse that’s what I immediately thought of – and Guzik’s commentary was helpful in showing me that it’s OK to seek help in understanding God’s Word from gifted teachers, who the Holy Spirit gives us (Wendy and others) – so thank you, Wendy!!

I’m still praying and confident that I will learn to LOVE God’s Word as others here do. I DO love it, I know that it is life! It just doesn’t impact me the way I hear Wendy and others talk about – some of that is because I have trouble understanding some of it… but I persevere and have stuck with RTW for 262 days straight now! Praise God!

    1. Mary, I love your honesty and vulnerability! There are lots of us who are right there with you. Don’t forget Deuteronomy 29:29! Know that God may just reveal a tiny nugget of truth each time we read. There may be much of each reading that is still a mystery. I’m wishing you and all the RTW family well as we approach the New Testament!!

    2. Oh I’m right there with you Mary! There are days the readings leave me scratching my head. Then I’ll listen to Wendy’s video or read comments from you and others there it is… that light bulb moment. Thank you Mary for your openness and sincerity.

  2. One more comment on the building of the wall–it was used as a reference in the movie “Facing the Giants” (if you haven’t seen this movie, please do! Great testimony of faith!). When the football team was struggling, the coach mentioned how each man built their own section of the wall, and so each player should go out and block the man in front of him….”Go build me a wall!” and they did.
