Put Me To The Test

Put me on trial, LORD, and cross-examine me. Test my motives and my heart.
Psalm 26:2

My Takeaways

Something Old

Remember me LORD in the light of Your unfailing love and compassion. (see Ps.25:6)

I pray this this how God remembers me, rather than by the times I disappointed Him.

Something New

David was confident enough in his demonstrated life of faith that he asked God to examine and try him. If David were not in fact trusting in God or walking rightly, he wanted God to show him and teach him.

974 baw-khan : examine prove tempt and try by trail (Psalm 17:3, Psalm 26:2)

2713 khaw-kar’: to search, search for, search out, examine, investigate (Psalm 139:23)

  • You have tested my thoughts and examined my heart in the night. You have scrutinized me and found nothing wrong. I am determined not to sin in what I say. Psalm 17:3 (974)
  • Put me on trial, LORD, and cross-examine me. Test my motives and my heart. Psalm 26:2 (974)
  • Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Psalm 139:23 (2713)

Am I as confident as David to ask God to test me?

Do I really want to know the answer?

Something to do

Really think about… Do I want God to really test and examine me?

  1. Such wonderful Psalms today! Thank you for the lesson, Wendy. It was so helpful to hear how even you are challenged to ask the Lord to test you … Inviting Him to dig deeper is more than just giving lip service. I need to yield my heart and life to His chiseling.

What stood out to me in today’s reading was all the places that the psalms mention a path – Psalm 23:3; 25:4, 8, 12. David asked the Lord to show him the right path. Over and over he sought the Lord for direction. I always THOUGHT I did this when making decisions, etc., because I would pray about something – but I didn’t WAIT for an answer. I just prayed, did what I thought was best (there is a way that SEEMS right to a man!) and invited God along for the ride. Not David – he asked the Lord to show him the right path, to lead him on the right path. Well, I have been praying and seeking the Lord about a potential job offer – which came yesterday!!! I prayed for the Lord to open the door if He wanted me there and BEGGED him to close the door, if He didn’t want me there. I made a list of criteria that needed to be met (salary, etc.) in order determine what the Lord’s answer was. And every criteria was met, and an offer received yesterday, praise the Lord!!!

To Do: Allow the Lord to lead me on His path (way of living).

  2. -I agree with Mary above. The psalms in today’s reading are such wonderful psalms!

-I am encouraged and comforted by David’s honesty with God in Psalm 22, but as he offend does, he turns it around to praise in the end.

-Ps 25 “Show me the right path, point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you. . .He shows the proper path to those who go astray. He leads the humble in doing right, teaching them his way. . .He will show them the path they should choose.”

-From Ps 23 Thank God for providing all that I need, for rest, for peace, for strength, for protection, and eternity with Him.

-From Ps 26 I DO want God to test my motives and my heart. But as with Wendy, I’m not always sure I want His answer. However, I am challenged to take this seriously and spend a little more time listening when I ask God to do this during my prayer time.

  3. My take away for today was similar to those above. Psalm 25:8 was the nugget God showed me- He will show the proper path to those who go astray. I pray God helps me to stay on the proper path that leads to Him.

  4. Good morning everyone!
There’s so much to meditate on in these psalms!

    Something old:
    Psalm 23:3b-4a:
He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name.
Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me…

I used to think this meant even though I was the one choosing a dark path, but today I thought that dark paths could be because of my choice, or the choice of others and the evil in the world, God doesn’t specify that part. But, there are times when we have to walk through dark valleys, they are there and sometimes unavoidable. And he’s still there.

    Something new:
    Psalm 25:8:
The Lord is good and does what is right; he shows the proper path to those who go astray.
The NIV says…therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.

This reminded me of Jesus and his example in the gospels, that he had a heart to help counsel those who most needed it: sinners. Love and mercy for others is very important to Him, and should be for me, too.

    Something to do:
Let compassion guide me and be forgiving to someone who needs it.

  5. While digging I learned that Psalms 22, 23, 24 are The Passional Psalms. Read them from Jesus’ perspective…..
    22- Good Friday
    23 – Holy Saturday
    24 – Easter Sunday
Another fascinating way God’s word comes alive!!

  6. I had done the reading and then read Wendy’s comments and you all’s comments, and really thought I had missed the nuggets as I was way off…then I realized I had read May 9 instead of May 8! Good news…May 9 has good stuff too! 🙂
