When The Battle Breaks You Down

Before the battle the Israelites went to Bethel and asked God, “Which tribe should go first to attack the people of Benjamin?
Judges 20:18a

My Takeaways

Something Old

When the battle is hard,

  • Saturate yourself in His presence. (Worship, Read the Word)
  • Seek His Direction even after defeat. (Pray, If you feel led, invite others to pray)
  • Stay Humble. (Weep, Fast, Confess)
  • Stay in the Fight.

Something New

F.B. Meyer recommended not reading Judges 19. Commenting on this first verse, he wrote: “It will be sufficient to ponder these words, which occur four times in the book, without reading further in this terrible chapter, which shows the depths of the depravity to which may sink apart from the grace of God.”

The sordid story…

Something to Do

Don’t let defeat stop me. Defeat might be exactly what God is using to humble me before the victory, so I don’t take credit.

  1. What bizarre events in today’s reading! Not sure what it all means. It seems to be the consequences of everyone doing what was right in his own eyes. And how did that work out? Mayhem!! It shows the depth of depravity that will come when everyone does what is right in his own eyes. I am so looking forward to moving on to the book of Ruth.

    1. Oh I had the same thoughts today! So much destruction and evil and violence in today’s reading. Doing what they saw fit was not good! Good reminder for me to seek God not myself. Looking forward to Ruth tomorrow!!

  2. Today’s reading struck me as a warning for how we are living today—in America and in other parts of the world. To me this sounds like a heart problem. Much of today’s culture/society has becomes their own authority, acting on their own opinions of right and wrong, putting their tribal loyalties above God’s ways and commands. They have replaced decency and morality with radical indecency, depravity, perversion, and violence. The ultimate results can have detrimental effects on futures of generations. We must not let this happen! We must continually call people back to God and work toward the re-establishment of God’s moral and spiritual reign in the heart of every person. (commentary from Judges 19:30)

I was horrified and sickened by a video that was posted on Facebook yesterday showing a woman being beheaded and the police stood and watched it. I am not sure what country this was, but it was real. And it was awful. At first, I was shocked that it had not been banned from FB. And then, I felt like it was there to show us the horrors that are happening in today’s world. We have so much work to do as Christians. The enemy is working hard to destroy humanity with evil and violence. Sadly, the magnitude of the horrors we read about in Judges exist today.

  3. I love old hymns as well. I am really not a big fan of the book of Judges, such difficult reading. I am looking forward to starting Ruth tomorrow.
