RTW April 3

Live Well-Adjusted, to God

Again the Israelites did evil in the Lord’s sight. They served the images of Baal and Ashtoreth, and the gods of Aram, Sidon, Moab, Ammon, and Philistia. They abandoned the LORD and no longer served him at all.
Judges 10:6

My Takeaways

Something Old

Israel’s worship of neighboring gods reminds us that the people of God are often in danger of worshiping what the world worships.

It angers God.

It causes God to abandon us.

Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. (The Message)  Romans 12:2

Am I well-adjusted rightly to God, or wrongly to the world?

Well-Adjusted to God

  • Fixed on Him.
  • Fixed on His ways.

Something New

The killing is hard…. Deuteronomy 29:29.

Something to Do

Live well-adjusted to God, not the world.

  1. And he was grieved by their misery.
(Even after he said he wouldn’t rescue them anymore) Judges 10:16
    This shows our Father’s heart.

I have done the same at times in my walk with God. Somewhere along the way the lines of communication were dropped, the world pulled me away, I stopped seeking the Lord, and I hate to admit, I also stopped serving him completely. That is heartbreaking after all he is to me and has done in my life. But since beginning RTW again this year, I have found my fire again. I’ve prayed for a hunger and a desire for God’s word and I seek him daily with my whole heart. I never ever want to lose this closeness with him again. I never want to go back to that place in the pit. I never want to skip even just one morning of meeting with him because even that would cause me personally to stumble. That’s how it happens for me…1 missed day turns into……I have to adjust things in my life to make the time to seek him, to abide and do my part intentionally to remain in him. It doesn’t just happen, it’s very intentional. The world will try to pull us away and will fight for our allegiance but we have to keep our eyes fixed on the only one who can fill us and the only one who can truly satisfy our hearts. Like Wendy said…
    Fixed on Him
    Fixed on his ways
    Fixed on his word

I felt the same as Wendy about the killing. It’s hard to read about all the violence. It makes me cringe. Deut 29:29

    1. Thanks for sharing about the heart of God evidenced in today’s reading. I read it but missed its significance until reading your post and the one from haneg20 below.

    2. Thank you for sharing. Yes it’s intentional! Just read great article, Gods justice in the land of Canaan, put out by The Gospel Coalition. Very insightful.
May all Gods people remain intentional.

  2. My takeaway was to not turnaway from God. I never want Him to get to the point of not rescuing me and having to let me go the way of my idols. I loved reading about His heart though and that he had great grief for the misery they were suffering. I want to fix my eyes on Him alone and let all other idols in my life fall away. This is the only path to victory.

In the account of Jephthah I noticed in verse 7-8 that his brothers hated him and had abandoned him until they needed him. I was convicted that I can often leave God to the side until I need him. I try to accomplish things in my own strength but when that doesn’t work I call on Him. I want to be in a constant conversation with Him all day not just calling to Him when I get in a hardship. Again, fix my eyes in Him.

  3. ~In Judges 10:6, it says that the Israelites did evil in the LORD’s sight “again” and that they “finally” cried out to the LORD for help.
~I want to be quick to cry out to God in repentance when I’ve sinned and for help whenever I need it. Make a regular practice of doing this daily as I spend time with the Lord in the morning but then moment-by-moment as needed.
~Such a good reminder from Wendy not to get caught up in worshiping what the world worships. It is so easy to get sucked in.
