And The Giant Will Fall

The LORD who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!
1 Samuel 17:37a

My Takeaways

Something Old

Oh, how much easier life would be if we adopt David’s battle philosophy. We often get caught up in our humanness, and try to fight life’s battles in our strength. In this passage, we see several truths about how to approach a giant.

  • David gave God the victory before he ever went to the battlefield. He had experienced the power of God in the pastures as he killed bear and lions. Therefore, he could assuredly reason with Saul, “God gave me victory then; He will give me victory now.” We can have confidence in our future success based on God’s past success.
  • David knew the victory was to bring God the glory. He didn’t have a personal agenda or want to make a name for himself. Danger comes when we try to steal the glory of the Lord for ourself.
  • David ran toward the battle with his own weaponry. Our confidence and competence comes from the Lord. He will equip us to face our giant. All we have to do is offer what we have to Him, and watch Him work.

  1. For me this all related to my battle with food, food addiction and my lifetime struggle to maintain living a healthy lifestyle. I knew right from the start of my Whole30 that my focus had to be on God. I tried way too many times and tried too many different ways to gain victory on my own, in my own strength and in my own willpower and it never worked. I had short lived success, temporary wins, but never the freedom I longed for. But this time was different. I truly believe in my heart that being in Gods word everyday for the 2 months prior to starting my Whole Health journey, is what equipped me to have success and begin to have victory in this battle. God prepared my heart and mind to be in the right place, and He turned my focus toward him. My eyes are fixed on him and my heart wants to glorify him. That changed everything for me because I wasn’t doing it for myself this time. This is a giant in my life, a battle that has gone on for years and years. God has begun to hand victory over to me! So much freedom has been found and it’s not over-it will be an ongoing battle and I must continue everyday to depend on Him because His word says (“this is the Lord’s battle”) 17:47
(“The Lord rescued me”) 17:47 and he WILL do it again! Lord, with your strength, I’ve got no excuse! I’ll be a conqueror cause you fight for me! I’ll be a champion claiming your victory!
I have everything documented so I can look back and see how the Lord has been faithful, I won’t forget. I can have complete confidence in his promises. He has proven himself faithful over and over again in my life! I’ve seen him move mountains and I believe, I’ll see him do it again!
God, give me a heart like David, Lord be my defense, so I can face my giants with
    CONFIDENCE!!!!!!!

  2. Everything David did was unto or for the Lord and His people. Everything Saul did was unto or for Saul. Oh, I am so much more like Saul than David. Lord, give me a heart for you like David’s.

I loved what Wendy said about Saul giving David his armor “We don’t need to dress like anyone else”. This is such a struggle for me as I have always been somewhat of a chameleon – trying to BE who I think YOU want me to be in order to be loved. Learning to be ME (actually, first learning who I am in the Lord) is a process.

Something New: David rejected Saul’s armor, but received Jonathan’s!

I have been listening to Guzik’s sermon series on 1 Samuel – it has been very helpful.

    1. Thank you @jlg5309, it has been my battle as well. I go up and down, never fully giving it to the Lord. Thank you for your thoughts!

  5. Loved reading our first psalm of David today! I’ve always loved the psalms and really love reading them in context of the events they were written in. I love how David sought the Lord in his fear and praised Him before he victory was even seen. Vs. 11 David prays that the Lord would not just kill the enemy but stagger them with His power and bring them to their knees. This stuck out to me as a reminder to pray for evil to be staggered by God’s power.
