And Then One Day a Donkey Talked

Then the LORD gave the donkey the ability to speak. “What have I done to you that deserves your beating me three times?” it asked Balaam.
Numbers 22:28

My Takeaways

Something Old

Examine the messenger, as well as the message.

A talking donkey.

A pagan prophet.

We must know the Truth and the Author of Truth

Something New

Balaam obviously had a reputation of being a “diviner” for hire, or Balak would not have sent his messengers with an offer.

  • Balaam’s first mistake was letting evil spend the night.
What price would I pay to compromise what is right?
  • Balaam loved money more than he loved the will of God.
What do I love more than God’s will?
  • Balaam engaged in dialogue with evil in the “name of the LORD.”
What do I do in the “name of the LORD?”

Something to Do

Pay attention to every “donkey”. God might be trying to tell me something very important.

  1. Something new: Balaam used divination to hear from the Lord and He STILL spoke to Balaam!?!? This one has me completely perplexed.

“Look, I have come to block your way because you are stubbornly resisting me” 22:32. Oh how merciful is our God that He will use whatever means necessary to block our way if we are in the wrong path! Too often I am like Balaam when He does this though – stubbornly beating the donkey so I can get where I need to go, what I want etc

Also – 24:17…. prophecy about Jesus!

To Do: Listen. And speak ONLY the message God has put in my mouth.

  2. I have no power to say whatever I want. I will speak only the message that God puts in my mouth. 22:38
Stop gossiping, stop saying anything negative about anyone. Period. By God’s spirit, I have the power to do this.
But how can I curse those whom God has not cursed? How can I condemn those whom the Lord has not condemned? 23:8
This is prideful and arrogant. I have no right to judge anyone.
Instead Bless them! 23:11 (my enemies)

and God met him (me) there. 23:4
    He always does.

Lord, let me be the one who’s eyes see clearly, who hears the words of God, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who bows down with eyes wide open, who has knowledge from the Most High. 23:3-4 and 24:16
    Amen. ❤️

The verse “They are like tall trees planted by the Lord, like cedars beside the waters”
23:6 made me think of the song by Casting Crowns “We were made to Thrive”

      1. Thank you so much for checking in and also for your prayers, I am so grateful for them. It’s going amazing. I do not miss FB at all in fact, I have much more time to get things done around the house which is a blessing. I didn’t realize the time I was just wasting scrolling. I feel like I might just delete my account after the 30 days, I don’t know yet. The Whole 30 is going better than I could have planned. I am fully committed to it because I committed it to God. He is answering the prayers!! It’s different this time, He showed me its not about me or any of the vain reasons I might have had for losing weight. It’s ALL about honoring Him and I’ve kept my focus on Him and He is giving me the strength. The Whole 30 is just what I needed to get rid of gluten, sugar and dairy to let my body heal. I feel awesome after only just 7 days. I’m so excited to be healthy again and to keep going in this healthy lifestyle! Thank you again for your prayers and to anyone who has or is praying for me, they are making such a difference! ❤️

  3. ~Even though Balaam didn’t do everything right, he was faithful to only speak what the LORD told him to say. He didn’t compromise on that.
~Wendy’s teaching was right on time for me today, regarding when to speak to someone about something and when to wait.

  4. I love what Enduringword.com had to say about the donkey –

“The donkey is a perfect picture of a simple, unspectacular, yet obedient follower of God – sensitive to God’s direction, a thorn to the disobedient, and a victim of the wrath of the disobedient.”

May I learn to be more ‘donkeyish’ every day.

    1. Love this!

Speaking of donkeys, a while back I read a book called “Flash, the Homeless Donkey.” It was a wonderful true story about a donkey who taught the author about “life, faith, and second chances.”

  5. Balaam reported the words of God, but it did not change who he was. The true nature of his heart is revealed later. There is a big eternal difference in being used by God and being a follower of God. God can use me any way he wants because he is God. I have to decide for myself if I want to become a follower of Christ. By becoming a follower of Christ I can receive the gift of salvation. My heart will be changed unlike Balaam.

    1. Thank you for such a great description of being used and following…May we be used as we are following.
