When The Unnormal Happens

So the sun stood still and the moon stayed in place until the nation of Israel had defeated its enemies. Is this event not recorded in The Book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the middle of the sky, and it did not set as on a normal day.
Joshua 10:13

My Takeaways

Something Old

God is in charge of normal.

The sun stood in the sky. It did not set as on a normal day. Joshua 10:13

  • Complaining about the “unnormal,” might we miss God’s direct message to us.
  • Manipulating the “unnormal,” might me we miss God’s creative genius.
  • Controlling the “unnormal,” might me we miss God’s lesson of leaning on Him.

Live to expect the unexpected from the unpredictable God. He makes the “unnormal” work for us every time.

Something New

When I’m at my weakest, God is at His strongest in me.

Joshua traveled all night from Gilgal. (Joshua 10:9)

Something to Do

Live for the unexpected and embrace it when I see the experience.

  1. Great lesson Wendy. I’m glad you chose that verse! The teaching on “unnormal” resonated with me as I have minor surgery in two weeks. Talk about “unnormal.” My routine is about to be turned topsy-turvy and it’s not sitting well with me. I know God has brought me to this place and I know He is working to free me of some strongholds so I have to look at it as a good thing. But not being able to do my “normal” for a long time period after the surgery feels very scary to me. I will hang on to Wendy’s “He makes the “unnormal” work for you every time.” I must lean into Him and not try to control it, I must not complain lest I miss His message for me.

    1. Thanks for sharing! I can relate. I, too, like my routine and knowing what to expect. It’s so good when God meets us right where we are with His Word. I prayed for you after reading your post, for His peace as you wait for the day of your surgery. Will you post again when it’s almost time for your surgery so we can pray for you then too?

      1. Oh I would love you to pray for me! The strongholds I’m facing are decades-old and sometimes look insurmountable. I know God is greater and I’m feeling a glimmer of hope. Thank you!

        1. I prayed for you this morning Val, before I even read this. I prayed for strongholds to be broken, walls to come crumbling down and chains to break. God is doing something powerful in you. I will pray for your upcoming surgery as well. I have no doubt that He will use that time to work powerfully in your life. May your heart be prepared for all that He has for you. ❤️

    2. Valerie – I’m praying for you as you prepare for and in the days after your surgery.

  2. Josh 11:23 stood out to me. They finally had control of the entire land and God gave them rest. I looked it up and they had been doing battle for the land for 5 yrs. That’s a long time! The victory was theirs from the beginning but they had to still fight the battles. Made me think of my own life. I have victory through Jesus but I still have to do battle over my flesh everyday. I need to be courageous and faithful to obey and fight from victory and not succumb to fear or discouragement. It may take some time but victory is mine and I have the hope of eternal rest in Jesus for today and for eternity!

    1. It said they waged war for a long time. Thanks for looking up how long that long time was. Wow! 5 years! I was typing my post below before yours showed up here. We had similar thoughts.

  3. ~When God is fighting for you and giving you the victory, He will often encourage you, telling you not to be afraid. Even when the task/battle seems overwhelming from a human viewpoint, He can use supernatural means. In Joshua’s case, it was a terrible hailstorm at just the right time and the sun and moon standing still for a whole day.

~Joshua 11:18 says they were “were waging war a long time to accomplish this.” Even when God is with us in the battle and leading us to ultimate victory, it does not always happen quickly and without a fight.

~I noted many times in today’s reading wording about things being done as the LORD commanded or instructed. Just a reminder again about how important obedience is.

  4. Hi all! I have been traveling for Spring Break (I live in Iowa and we went to Colorado for the sixth time-love it there!) and took you all with me! I was able to keep up on my Kindle with reading and videos, comments…but not journal! I missed it! But it was so nice to keep up with your insights. I love the conversation about not always gleaning something on your own, but yes, sometimes from the video or other’s writings. That’s ok! I love the “aha” moments too.
One day you said “God is our home,” and when I was traveling, that was perfect! It doesn’t matter where we are, God is our home and our everything.
(By the way, it was so good to come home and be able to FINALLY see our driveway not covered in ice like it has been for soooooo long!)
