When Not If

If at that time you and your children return to the LORD your God, and if you obey with all your heart and all your soul all the commands, I have given you today, then the LORD your God will restore your fortunes. He will have mercy on you and gather you back from all the nations where he has scattered you.
Deuteronomy 30:2-3 (Read v1-4)

My Takeaways

Something Old

God knows. He knows the temptations we face, and He knows when we will slip because He knows our every step. His grace is there, waiting to bring us back to Him when we are aware of our sin and ready to return fully to Him.

God loved Israel. God loves you and me. He is ready with open arms full of grace to restore us and realign our heart with His. A returned heart lovingly submits to the Father. The returned heart is filled with peace and longs to stay aligned with God’s will.

  • If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (ESV) 1 John 1:9
  • Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. (ESV) James 4:8a

Something New

Deuteronomy 31:11

I wonder how often the Priest read the Book of Instruction. He was supposed to read it every seven years.

Something to Do

Praise God for the when.

  1. My take away, how crucial it is, passing on the torch to the next generation, one relay runner to the next until the torch reaches the next generation.. The metaphor for life is “passing of the torch”, one generation must pass the torch to the next.
We are talking about faith here, the responsibility to pass on the truth to the next generation. “God has not designed faith to be something that can be passed along genetically, it must be done personally. If we do not actively pass along the faith, its flame will die.” If the flame dies, “Christianity” is one generation away from extinction. As Moses passed on the torch to Joshua, we have the confidence God will be with us as in Deuteronomy 31:8 Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail nor abandon you.
The Israelites learned a hard lesson, they preferred idols (the ways of a materialistic world over their God), they had all the tools to accomplish God’s purpose and plans but chose to forsake the Lord their God. We too have all the tools to keep the torch lit, it must be done personally and actively with faith!!

    1. I had similar thoughts about the passing of the torch from Moses to Joshua. Moses encouraged and exhorted both Joshua and the people.

  2. ~We need changed hearts to be able to love God with all heart and soul. And only God can change our hearts. On this side of the cross that happens through the power of the Holy Spirit as we submit to His leading and guiding in our lives. (Deut 30:6 & Ezekiel 36:25-27)
~The Song of Moses was given to him by God to teach to the people. The words of songs are often easier to remember than words I try to remember on their own. (Deut 31:19)
~Deut 30:20 notes the key to your life. Loving God, obeying Him, and committing yourself firmly to Him. Something I need to reaffirm daily, which is why it is so important for me to be in God’s Word every day. It is my anchor and my compass.

    1. I had the same thoughts about Deut 30:20. It is a continually process to love, obey and commit myself to God.

  3. Deut 30:20 —
Choose Life! How do I do this…
    1. Love the Lord my God
    2. Obey Him
    3. Commit myself firmly to Him.

The Strongs meaning for Firmly is…to cling to or adhere to. Figuratively it is to catch by pursuit. To commit myself to God i must pursue Him. I catch Him by daily pursuing Him.

I liked what Guzik had to say about this verse…
“That you may love the LORD your God: To love God this way, to really trust Him, is explained well in Deuteronomy 30:20. To love and trust God means to obey His voice, for a child who really loves and trusts their father will obey him. It means to cling to Him, for if we really love and trust Him, we will be attached to Him. It means to regard Him as our life and the length of your days, because if we love and trust Him, He is not part of our life, He is our life.”

    1. I enjoyed the end of your comment especially. He is not part of our life, he is our life. How am I releasing “self” to be living out the rich life I live in Christ?
