The Call of the Church for the Poor

When you are harvesting your crops and forget to bring in a bundle of grain from your field, don’t go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigners, orphans, and widows. Then the LORD your God will bless you in all you do.
Deuteronomy 24:19

My Takeaways

Something Old

  • Poverty is timeless and without borders.
  • Poverty doesn’t discriminate.
  • Poverty is not overlooked by God.

This Levitical law is a matter of humanity, and we don’t get to determine who we will or won’t help. John said, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.” (NIV)  Luke 3:11

Something New

Anyone who is hung is cursed by God. So God had to curse His Son? (Deuteronomy 21:23)

Something to Do

Care for the poor.

  1. So many of these laws leave me shaking my head – honestly, some just seem so weird – I don’t understand them! Some even seem random but i known God is NOT random and that HE has a plan and purpose for everything and everyone.

I have so much excess, (leftovers in the field) and I tend to want to hold onto it. Yet God wants me to give away what I don’t need. Interestingly, I have a coffee table that I’ve been trying to sell online for over a month and have not been able to. Last week I felt the prompting to find someone to give it to. But I paid a lot of money for it and have barely used it! I feel like this MAY be confirmation to do that. Give it away. Drop it off at habitat for humanity or find someone I know that is in need.

In a side note – I visited a baptist church in my area yesterday and it was wonderful! I even went to a small group afterward and they are studying the Bible there as well! Not a book about the Bible or containing a new way of looking at Gods Wors – but actual scripture (studying Ecclesiastes!). I’m reaching out to the pastor today who I met briefly and I’m going to ask to sit with him. I have so much hope Thank you to all of you who may have been praying!

    Have a wonderful day everyone!

    1. I have been praying for you as you have been on my heart the past few days. I am so glad you found a Bible-teaching church in your area. I will be praying that God gives you clarity if this is the church you should start attending or if you should still visit others before deciding.

  2. Verses 22:20-21
This had taken me aback this morning. Jesus has saved me from the fate I deserve of being stoned to death (death), for disgraceful crimes I have committed while living in my parents home. I am so sorry Father, I didn’t know any better when I was so young. It makes me ill to my stomach to think back on all of it, the disgraceful crimes I’ve committed. I am so incredibly grateful I am not that person anymore. I am so grateful to be clean and washed white as snow because of Jesus. I am so grateful to be purged from such evil in God’s eyes.

He turned the intended curse into a blessing because the Lord your God loves you. Deuteronomy 23:5
In other words He is making beauty from my ashes.
I love you too Father. ❤️

    Friends,
“God is madly in love with you”…..

  3. I love how it noted the king was to copy for himself the instruction on a scroll and read it daily. Regular reading prevents him from becoming proud, prevents him from turning away and ensures his descendants will reign for many generations. There is a lot of take away here. I have tried copying scripture and though laborious it really is beneficial. Somehow it allowed me more time to slow down and really think on the words I was writing. If the Lord encourages you to do this take a leap of faith and try it. It also states the many benefits of daily reading. I love how when the Israelites faced a battle they were reminded by the priests that it was God who was fighting for them and giving the victory. I need to remember that in the everyday battles of face and not to forget to give Him the praise when the battle is won.

    1. I have done that too. Copied some of my favorite verses (most from the book of Isaiah) onto 3×5 cards and keep them near where i read. And made a copy for my younger son to take with him, too. There’s something about writing it down or speaking the words aloud that just seems to ‘bring it home’ for you.

  4. Deut 23:5 “He turned the intended curse into a blessing because the Lord your God loves you.” Wow! Because God loves me he can take what is intended for harm to me and make it a blessing. All simply because of love.

Deut 24:18 challenged me to regularly remember what I’ve been freed from. Doing this helps me to extend grace to others in their journey.

    1. Well, I was convicted by your comment about being challenged to regularly remember what you’ve been freed from how this helps you extend grace to others in their journey. The extending grace is what got me. This is something I need to do more.

  5. ~I felt like much of today’s reading was teaching about how to be responsible adults, considering the needs and safety of others and to treat others as we would like to be treated.
~I was also struck by the instructions to care for the widows, orphans and foreigners.

  6. Reflecting on my “young” life in Christ, oh how I miss those innocent days, reading the word, believing every word I read, soaking in the milk of the word!
Went to a family wedding shower, many of them were non believers, they had games with prizes, the last task was to write instructions, giving advice for the bride (couple) to have a blessed marriage, a required total of 25 words. I prayed and asked the Lord to give me the right words, every thought was God sent and thus I wrote. We all handed in our papers with advice, 25 words exactly. The bride to be and her mother chose mine and read it to those present, 25 words exactly. The non believers heard the message of salvation and about Jesus!
They handed me my prize, removing the wrapping, it was an ash tray. What to do, where is wisdom, after 25 words of advice from the Lord I needed to be ever so careful with my reactions. The thought “give it away”!
“I’m not a smoker, so if anyone would like this ash tray, you may have it.”
Deuteronomy 23:5 He turned the intended curse into a blessing because the Lord your God loves you.
God turned the situation around to what I felt was a curse (offensive) so I could extend grace.
