RTW February 26

Hey wonderful RTW Friends!!!
This Thursday is our February Facebook Live.

Our guest is Whitney Capps. She is going to share her insights and expertise on the law and it’s application to us.

Tithing And Giving

One-tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain from the fields or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord and must be set apart to him as holy.
Leviticus 27:30

My Takeaways

Something Old

Nowhere in the New Testament does Jesus, or any of the disciples tell Christians to tell.

The tithe was part of the Law and required by the Old Covenant for the Israelites.

But Jesus came to fulfill the law.

Paul on giving

  • Gifts should be in keeping with income (1 Corinthians 16:2)
  • Giving comes back. (2 Corinthians 9:6)
  • Give how what your heart leads. (2 Corinthians 9:7)
  • Give willingly and with cheer, not with a grudge. (2 Corinthians 9:7)
  • Giving invites God’s generosity and abundance. (2 Corinthians 9:8)

Proverbs on giving

  • Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. (ESV) Proverbs 3:27
  • …the righteous gives and does not hold back. (ESV) Proverbs 21:26
  • He who is generous will be blessed, for he gives some of his food to the poor. (NASB) Proverbs 22:9

Something New

  • One for the Levites
  • One for the use of the Temple
  • One for the Poor of the Land

Totally more than 20%

Something to Do

Give….

  1. Give, give, give! Oh it is so much easier for me to give financially! What really costs me is to give my time and to sacrifice my own Needs in order to serve others. I’m left today with this question “What would happen today if you said ‘yes’ to every request – not matter how inconvenient?” This is honestly a challenge for me at my job-I tend to say no a lot in order to draw a line in the sand so as not to be taken advantage of. And often – pretty much ALL the time actually – nobody is looking to take advantage of me. They just need help. So today I will say “yes”. Proverbs 21:26 in the Passion Translation says “Extravagant giving never leads to poverty”. So I’m letting go of the poverty mindset that there won’t be enough for me if I give my time to others. Here goes!!!!!

    1. Thank you for sharing, spoke to me too!! I def live more in the poverty mindset most of the time. But giving feels so good!! No more fear, God will provide!

  2. In response to last week’s question regarding the gods of this world, I did the numbers: there are 168 hours in a week. One tenth of that would be about 17 hours. I took a look at how many hours I “give” to the Lord (serving each week) and came up short of that. So I did some research and some commentators believe that devotion time, small group time, and Bible study time can also be counted as time to the Lord. Nevertheless, I am going to try to add to my hours of serving. I love serving at church and I’m looking forward to doing more of it.

Leviticus was an eye-opener and a blessing and it made me ever so much more grateful for my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Here’s what commentator Clarke has to say about finishing this incredible book:

    i. “READER, thou hast now gone through the whole of this most interesting book; a book whose subject is too little regarded by Christians in general. Here thou mayest discover the rigid requisitions of Divine justice, the sinfulness of sin, the exceeding breadth of the commandment, and the end of all human perfection… By this law then is the knowledge, but not the cure of sin… We see then that Christ was the END of the law for righteousness (for justification) to every one that believeth.” (Clarke)

    1. I read this quote from Clarke also. Loved how he summed up the book! I agree with you, this study through Leviticus has made me appreciate Christ’s sacrifice so much more than ever before.

    2. I really like the idea of dedicating a tenth of our time to God and His work. I did a tally and realized I could do better with how much of my time God gets. I’m encouraged to make room in my schedule for Him. Thanks so much for sharing this truth.

  3. I really enjoyed this read through Leviticus. I learned so much and it has helped me see so many other connections in scripture. As I’ve read in various places in NT recently I see so many connections to Leviticus and having studied it I am understanding more of the NT as well! So exiting and be growing in God’s Word!

    1. I long to get to a place where I can say that I enjoyed reading Leviticus. ?. I was bewildered through most of it. But I stuck it out – even though I wanted to quit – and even though I missed a few days. I am committed to completing this year!!!

      1. You’ll get there! This is my 3rd year and each time I understand more and fall more in love with the word. Persistence not perfection!

      2. The more you stay with it, the more God will reveal to you. Don’t get hung up on what you don’t understand. Let go and let God show you what He wants you to know. He will. Hang in there friend! It’s soooooo worth it! You can do this!

  4. I have a technical question-I usually do this study on my computer. But, I would like to use my phone or Kindle Fire as backup, especially with Spring Break coming (if we ever quit getting snow and ice here in Iowa!). When I go to Wendy’s site on the phone or Kindle, I cannot get to the Login page! Cannot get to the actual study or videos like on the computer. Any ideas as to what is going on? Thanks!

    1. I usually do the study from my iPad. On an iPhone, go to wendypope.org. On that page, you will see a little drop-down “ladder.” Press that and you will see a list that includes Online Studies. Press on the little arrow that points down and you will see a list. At the top of the list is Membership Login, Read Thru The Word, etc. Hope this helps!

      1. Oh my gosh thank you! Turns out I was just “clicking” on the Online Studies button and getting the next page, bypassing the dropdown list! I really appreciate your help and now I can keep up while on the go-thank you!

  5. Just a quick note to say that I have been keeping up with my reading and journal notes the past few days. However, I have not been posting because I have had a couple other Bible study things that I have been working on that have a time limit on them so trying to manage my time. I should be caught by the end of this week so plan to be back to posting here again soon.

    1. I’m also looking forward to the Facebook Live tomorrow and hope to be able to listen live. Whitney is one of my favorites from First Five.

  6. I got SO much out of today’s reading. God has been speaking to so many different parts of my life through Leviticus.
One thing that struck me today was how I’m the world did Moses accurately count and keep track of all the hundreds and thousands of people for the census? 603,550! Wow

Each tribe lives with its own family banner. I am so grateful for my tribe, my family “Team Geary” we call ourselves.

Our one family leader from each tribe-my husband Chris, a chosen leader.
I love that picture of the family(tribe).

Wendy, I too hope that Jesus finds me with his word on my lap. ❤️
