However

However, if you do not listen to me or obey all these commands,…
Leviticus 26:14

My Takeaways

Something Old

Romans 1:18-25

Therefore, God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. (ESV)

We make a mistake when we think that it is God’s mercy or kindness that allows man to continue in sin. It is actually His wrath that allows us to go on destroying ourselves with sin. – Guzik

We avoid disobedience by avoiding temptation.

Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.  So, don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters. James 1:14-16

Something New

God speaks of this in Hosea 4:17 Ephraim is joined to idols, let him alone. (NASB) Expresses the judgmental aspect of God “giving us up,” leaving us to our own sin.  Psalm 81 is another reference of God leaving us to our sin.

  1. Wow! When we continue in sin this is the wrath of God! Sin and disobedience always have consequences. I’m struggling so much with Leviticus and connecting in any but Wendy’s lessons always reach me. One day (hopefully not in 10 years! Haha) I’m hoping to “get” these books of the law.

I think the biggest punishment for disobedience is separation from God. Not that we are ever separated from him but the feeling of separation that I have in the midst of disobedience/sin.

  2. “I broke the yoke of slavery from your neck so you can walk with your head held high!” God restored my dignity! This is done! I need to walk and live in the freedom Christ died for me to have! I’m no longer a slave to dear, I am a Child of God!

  3. I’ve struggled to understand this topic of God’s wrath and punishment. Mostly because I’ve come to learn that discipline (disciple) means correction and training and I hear it being used alot as to mean punishment. So the words get interchanged and it’s confusing. This is a very thorough and great article I found that helped me understand God’s wrath a bit better regarding OT and NT. I hope this helps.

  4. Obedience is key to enjoying God’s presence and blessing. When I walk in obedience I’ll have provision and abundance. God will walk among me. When I disobey I cut off His ability to bless and provide and walk among me. I never want him to have to give me over to my sin because I have hardened my heart to him and his presence. Walk in obedience and be quick to confess and turn back when I’ve disobeyed.
