RTW May 11

Hard to Hold

“I said to myself, ‘I will watch what I do and not sin in what I say.
I will hold my tongue when the ungodly are around me.’”
Psalm 39:1

My Take Aways

Something Old:

It is a challenge to hold our tongues whether we are surrounded by ungodly or godly.

Psalm 141:3
Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.” (NIV)
Take control of what I say, O Lord, and guard my lips. (NLT)

  • Pray for purity of heart
  • What goes in will come out

Luke 6:45

“For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (NIV)

“It’s who you are, not what you say and do, that counts. Your true being brims over into true words and deeds.”
(The Message)

“For his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.” (NASB)

Something New:

Psalm 40:5
“O LORD, my God, you have performed many wonders for us.  Your plans for us are too numerous to lists.”

God has numerous plans for us, not just one. This excites me!

Something to Do:

Pray for purity of heart.

May’s Verse
Psalm 19:14
“May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart by pleasing to you, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.”
(May 7, page 535)

O Be Careful Little Mouth What You Say

“I said to myself,” I will watch what I do and not in sin in what I say.”
Psalm 39:1

My Take Aways

Something Old

Consider every word a gift (The Message) that it may be a blessing to give God’s favor to those who hear it.
If my words are gift, what kind of gift am I giving?

Something New

The connection of our key verse to Psalm 15: 1 and 3 as well as Ephesians 4:29.

Ephesians 4:29
Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift. (The Message)

Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil word nor unwholesome or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but only such [speech] as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God’s favor) to those who hear it. (Amplified)

Something to Do

Watch my words.
Psalm 141:3
“Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.”

Psalm 19:14
“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

Faith Stretching/Strengthening Friday-RTW May 11

Faith Stretching/Strengthening

1 Settling back into my routine of morning moments with the Lord is my focus right now.  I am strongest and most effective when I have time with Him each morning.  Now that I am in one place, I want to be with Him early each morning.

2. An area of weakness I desire to strengthen requires self-discipline.

Word Study Wednesday-RTW May 9

Word Study

The Lord does not impose Himself on His children.  He will not make us do something like a Puppeteer controlling  a puppet.  He wants us to submit to Him, to give Him permission to mess with us out of our love for Him.  In verse 13, ”Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me,” David invites God to mess with Him, to keep Him from sinning.

Chasak – khaw-sak’
to withhold, restrain, hold back, keep in check.

When we ask God to hold us back from sin, we are giving Him permission to remove anything, even that which we hold dear, so that we might not willfully and pridefully sin.  We should ask God such a thing if don’t intend to submit His plan. Such submission can be painfully but the outcome is worth the pain.  We become more like Him and His holiness.
