The Cure for W.A.H.S.

Before Thanksgiving I shared about my unexpected diagnosis: W.A.H.S. (What About Her Syndrome.) (W.A.H.S)

Today I want to share with the cure for this condition. The remedy is found in Jesus’ response to Peter’s “What about him?” question. (John 21:21)

Jesus replies, “As for you, follow me.” (John 21:22)

Jesus didn’t placate Peter with answers about John’s future. He gave Peter one directive… “follow me.”

In my pity party for one, Jesus gave me the same directive: Wendy, follow me.

No ifs, ands, or buts about it. God doesn’t owe me any explanations as to the comings and goings of anyone. He simply wants me to follow Him. Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it? Or does it?

Follow in the Greek means to follow one who precedes, accompany, and join one as a disciple.  How did the disciples become disciples?

  • Jesus chose them. One by one Jesus called the disciples to be part of His inner circle.
  • The disciples chose Him. Each man abandoned their life and rights to the cause of Christ.

So what does it take for you and me to follow Jesus?

Jesus chooses us… and He already has.

“Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him In love.” Ephesians 1:4

“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.” John 6:44

And we choose Him. Not only choose Him, but abandon our rights for His cause and Kingdom.

Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. Luke 6:23

Seem a little overwhelming? I know. Take a deep breath and reread the Luke 6:23. Pay close attention to the word after cross. To follow Jesus… to become a disciple, we must choose daily to say to the Lord, “It’s Your day. You have sovereignly ordained everything that will come my way. I choose to deny me and to be dedicated to You.”

With laser focus on Jesus and accompanying Him each day, it’s impossible to say, “What about her?”

  1. Thank you Wendy for sharing the cure! I needed that kick in my behind or step on my toes today so thank you again!

  2. Thank you, Wendy. What a wonderful, touching post. Yes, I want to deny myself and take up my cross daily and follow Him. Your inspired words are a reminder of our call to follow Him.

  3. Pssst…The take up your cross verse is Luke NINE:23 ?

Thanks for this. I am a missionary in San Salvador and I am constantly worried about the other missionaries and what they’re doing, how they’re following God’s call and succeeding. I need to fine tune my “laser focus.”

    Muchas gracias, hermana.

  4. Wendy, I have just begun my spiritual journey at 62! I’m happy I have started it but feel ashamed I waited so long!!! I have never read the Bible! The first time I bought one was 3 months ago! Another shameful moment! I’m excited about this Bible reading and yet a little fearful of what I may discover!!! Thanks for this opportunity!!!

  5. Hi Wendy! My biggest challenge is getting started!!! This definitely intrigues me! What a wonderful opportunity for spiritual growth!

  6. Thank you Wendy for your obedience! I have been following your awesome devotional for a few years now and this is the fist time I have been brave enough to actually leave a comment! I am often, so moved by the stories and scripture you post daily. I am inspired to read the entire Bible start to finish starting the first of the Year, whether I win or not!! 🙂 But I wan to win! 🙂

My Biggest Challenge is, I agree with Kay, in that I am not consistent and fight with getting behind and then giving up. The feeling of inadequacy brings on defeat for me too!

I know I can do it, because God is in ME! 🙂

  7. The most challenging part to me is to take what is being said in the Bible, and to put it into a modern-day context while keeping the same meaning so that it’s understandable to us today.
