TGFABT – Psalm 43

Asking Why Again

“Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”
Psalm 43:11

The way to forget our miseries is to remember the God of our mercies.
~Matthew Henry

Remember His mercies:

  • the disposition to be compassionate or forbearing
  • the discretionary power of a judge to pardon someone or to mitigate punishment
  • an act of kindness, compassion, or favor
  • something that gives evidence of divine favor; blessing

It is difficult to have a downcast soul when praise is on your lips.

Count Your Blessings

When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Refrain

Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.

Refrain

When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings. Wealth can never buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

Refrain

So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be disheartened, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

His Mercies~ He is our Fountain…

Word Study

Send forth Your light and Your truth, let them guide me;let them bring me to Your holy mountain,to the place where You dwell. Psalm 43:3

So often in the midst of persecution we look for our light and our truth to deliver us. One of favorite Bible commentators David Guzik says this:  “The psalmist knows that His light and His truth isn’t enough – he needs the light and truth of the Lord. It isn’t within him, so if God doesn’t send it, he doesn’t have it.”

I love the meaning of truth in this verse.  It is long but too good not to share in its entirety.

emeth (eh’meth)

firmness, faithfulness, truth

  1. sureness, reliability
  2. stability, continuance
  3. faithfulness, reliableness
  4. truth
    1. as spoken
    2. of testimony and judgment
    3. of divine instruction
    4. truth as a body of ethical or religious knowledge
    5. true doctrine

This is what the psalmist is asking to lead Him. And where does he want to go?  The place where God dwells. Oh, dear friend don’t we all long to be where God dwells and how wonderful to be ushered to this sweet place by His truth. Take a moment to read this definition aloud. Praise Him for this truth, whether you feel it or not, praise Him.
